Amherst’s boys were unbeaten in eight of 12 matches and four of their last five before they fell 2-0 at North Olmsted in a Southwestern Conference match Wednesday night.
Good season so far. But the Comets are having an even better year in the classroom. The team has a collective grade point average of 3.5, and 16 of the 18 players on the permanent varsity roster have GPAs above 3.0.
“We stress academics and the kids push each other academically,” Comets coach Brett Thompson said. “Our seniors set the tone, we use them as examples and they push the younger kids to do well. I’ve seen these kids studying on the bus on our way home from road games, reading by the lights of their cell phones.”
Thompson said nine of his players are above 3.5 and four of them have 4.0 GPAs.

I hate players who take it upon themselves to denote every dumb play at the poker table:
“Terrible play… donk… bad bluff… donk… stupid… donk”
First of all, get a new word. At this point, donk is a donkish term for bad play. Secondly, if there were no “donks” out there making stupid moves then the only way that any one would ever make money would be through being on the right side of cold decks. So don’t go hating on bad players because if it wasn’t for them, then your genius play would just be run-of-the-mill crap gambling gambling. It is in part because of the donkeys that poker is as profitable as it is.
Frankly, I’m sick and tired of people scaring perfectly bad players away and then being forced myself to sit in the brewing stew of super-tight-know-it-all-pot-odds-shackle d players. Life is too short to spend your time with judgmental tightwads.
So I’ve got a plan. It’s a small plan and kind of trivial, but it’s a start.
In the spirit of the many great acronyms that the internet has given birth to: lol, lmao, gg, gl, own, pwn, etc, I give you dBAD (pronounced dee – bad) which stands for “don’t be a douchebag.”
Say you are at a table and a guy calls two other all-ins holding pocket fives. Now the guy with the fives is obviously way behind and making a mathematically unsound decision – to say the least – when a six miraculously hits the turn, giving the idiot the winning Number of the Beast.
One guy who lost holding QQ forces out “nh” while two other uninvolved players limit their chat to “wow.” And then comes the inevitable attack from a guy who had nothing to do with the hand itself but cannot abide such behavior at the poker table… his poker table:
“For making a call like that you sure have a lot to learn about poker.” As true as that may be, what good does it do anyone to say that?
So what do you do?
“dBAD”
And even though that guy won’t get it the first time, our movement will grow. Like a revolution, dBAD will grow upon the fingertips of even-tempered poker players everywhere, shutting down the wannabe Matusows and Tony Gs with an acronym of defensive aggression and sleek musicality (seriously, doesn’t dee bad just sound cool?)
So if you are sick of whiny know-it-alls spewing their hateful advice wherever and whenever bad luck strikes at the poker table, join me in proclaiming loudly and in 3/4s caps lock glory:
dBAD.

So tonight I pop into a localbar to see a friend of mine who was spinning I didnapos;t plan on staying as I had to look in on my friend Shonaapos;s foster cats so I just figured I would stop in say Hi to Buzz and Flash and head out on my way. Well he had a pretty good crowd and I drop off this 78 of my Grandfatherapos;s of a guy who did some great blue grass stuff back in the days when 78apos;s were considered state of the art. I have a ton of them my Grandfather had a ton of records. I still have them because I know how much he loved them. (I also have a pretty huge collections of 45apos;s from the late 50apos;s mid 60apos;s he recorded at the little booths they had at the 5 and dimes hewould record one or two every yearfor myGrandmother for their anniversary) Well any how me and Buzz are having our usual youapos;ve got to bring your records down ( I donapos;t have a player let alone one that plays 78apos;s) and this group of guys are pointing and talking in low hushed vocies. Buzz goes up to the bar and to grab us some drinks and this guy staggers over and starts going off about how "No matter how well I blow the DJ they ainapos;t gonna play no sitaar music." Yeah Iapos;m like what the fuck why would I want the DJ to play sitaar music and also being that Buzz and Flash are a couple and being that they are both guys I doubt the offer of head especially from girl me is going to get him to play something he didnapos;t want to. Then Iapos;m like dude I think he is attempting to insult me with a racial slurr one that dosenapos;t even apply to me. Which is kind of sad considering I am a Syrian, Puerto Rican,Nigerian, Jew really you have about 10 different racial slurrs just waiting there how can you get the wrong fucking one numb nuts I looked at him and was like "Hey pal if your going to throw some racial slurrs at me try one that applies asshole Iapos;m not Indian." So numb nuts gets all pissie and is like "go eat some cows you fucking paki whore.Iapos;ll fucking smack you bitch." Once again if your going to use racial slurrs get the right fucking one, I wanted be like dude just call me a sand nigger and have done with it, Iapos;m starting to feel bad for you. I also kind of wanted him to hit me so I could kick his ass (black belt) infront of his friends so not only would he have gotten his ass kicked by a girl but by a girl he couldnapos;t even insult with the right fucking racial slurr.
I can honestly say Iapos;ve never had this happen to me. I grew up 20 minutes from West Virginia. Iapos;ve gone to shows all over the place and Iapos;ve never had anyone treat me like I didnapos;t belong. Infact most of the bands and peopleve met in the "scene" have been nothing but nice and friendly hell a lot of the guys Iapos;ve let crash at my place or helped them out when they needed stuff so this was really odd.
Flash comes over and says to me "Donapos;t let the jerk get you down. Iapos;m always telling Buzz to watch getting all snuggly with me cause I donapos;t want to end up getting bashed you know how Rock-a-billys are." No I donapos;t because Iapos;ve never had anyone in that scene treat me with anything but the utmost respect.
I hope this isnapos;t an indication that a bunch of fucking wanna beapos;s are going to be hanging around the scene fucking it for everyone who is truely a fan of the music. Kind of like those assholes that show up at hardcore shows wearing steel toed comabat boots and spit on people and act like jerks because thatapos;s what they think will make people like them. Pittsburgh seems to have a problem with people invading a perfectly good club night or a "scene" and ruining everyone elseapos; good time because they want to buy into media stereo types...Ughh hopefully this will be a one time thing, or someone can send these asses a memo that Rock-a-billy doesnapos;t equal racism.

More than 2,600 Warren Hills Regional School District taxpayers turned out today to vote on spending $5.5 million for new athletic facilities, with 59 percent of them on the winning side.
The referendum passed 1,550-1,076. It is projected to cost each taxpayer $60 per year, equal to taxpayers' share of debt the district is retiring this year.
Slated for completion in the 2010-11 school year, the project includes a new track and turf football field, new bleachers, a new field house, lighting and other projects.
Leading up to today's vote, the school district's Web site said many of the athletic facilities, including the track and bleachers, are deteriorating and unsafe, forcing several teams to compete or practice at other schools or on municipal fields.
Voters twice rejected a similar proposition in 2004.
In December of that year, voters approved $36.8 million to expand Warren Hills Regional high and middle schools but rejected a second question that would have appropriated $6.1 million for a new athletic center and artificial turf field. Both proposals had been included in a single question earlier in 2004 and failed.

Nothing interesting has happened so far, and life is going quite well at the moment. School is simple at the moment, but it probably will not stay that way. If Imay be so bold, Yanagi-kun, may I ask for your assistance in Math? I seem to have some trouble with them currently, and I would be thankful for your help.
I may be seeking a job later on in the year, and I'll probably be doing some volunteer work as well. Should anyone know of a place seeking
more help, please let me know, as my job hunt is rather slow at the moment.
Things are rather normal at the moment, and nothing really exciting has happened during tennis practise, so there really isn't much to post about.

Next Tuesdays resumption of debate on the legality of the attempt by the state of Kentucky to seize control of 141 international online gambling domains (see previous Online-Casinos.com/InfoPowa reports) continues to generate significant interest both within and outside of the industry.
Judge Thomas Wingate of the Franklin Circuit Court, who had earlier signed off on a temporary seizure of domains through registrars at the behest of outsourced lawyers working for the state, faced a platoon of legal representatives from online gambling companies, trade associations and public interest groups supporting freedom of speech and the Internet at the initial hearing last week.
Lawyers for both sides argued legal technicalities centered on the legal standing and identification of domain owners and claims that the action against 141 domain names took place “under cover” and with no notice to their clients. They sought a continuation to brief Judge Wingate on matters of law which they contended will demonstrate the court has no jurisdiction and should dismiss the action.
Judge Wingate gave all involved until October 7 to submit detailed legal briefs on their positions and qualifications for legal standing. The judge pointed out that the case was a complex matter in law where decisions reached could set precedents and have far reaching consequences outside the online gambling industry . It was therefore appropriate that those with the right to be heard submitted their arguments for debate and examination.
However, the judge sounded an ominous note when he told lawyers representing the domain names at issue: “You are going to have to eventually pony up and say who these people are.”
In the meantime the judges temporary seizure of the domains remains in place.
The October 7 hearing looks likely to be even more crowded as opponents to the Kentucky states action, which officials have admitted is aimed at forcing operators to bar Kentucky online gamblers and pay unspecified compensation to state coffers, present their arguments in a case that is already attracting wide mainstream publicity.
The states lawyers, employed on a contingency no win no pay deal, have claimed that online gambling falls within existing legislation which prohibits gambling devices because domain names can be classified as such devices, a point that will no doubt be hotly contested. Online gambling is not specifically declared illegal in Kentucky, where Governor Steve Beshear has proved to be a staunch supporter of land-based casino and horseracing activity.
Among those who will have legal representatives present are the Internet Gaming Counsel, The Poker Players Alliance, iMEGA, the Internet Commerce Association and the Americans for Tax Reform, and it is understood that an open press conference is planned for the day before the October 7 hearing where a diverse range of representative bodies will make relevant statements.
The executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, John Pappas is driving the press conference and urges all interested parties to discuss participation with him by using the PPA website.

5 Stars Earl Swagger Hunts Again!
I fell in love with Stephen Hunters Earl Swagger novels this year. Luckily I discovered the first one at the beginning and listened to them on audiobook in order. There are three of them so far. HOT SPRINGS, PALE HORSE COMING, and HAVANA.
The Swagger name may sound familiar to people. Mark Wahlberg just starred in the movie SHOOTER as Earls son, Bob Lee Swagger. Stephen Hunter has been intermittently writing novels about father and son over the last few years. Earls adventures are set in the 1940s and 1950s. Bob Lees are more in present-day, and the latest novel in that series, THE 47th SAMURAI, has just been released.
If you havent read any of the Swagger novels, I really recommend reading them in order. Both series tell a story thats more mosaic than anything else. Both are pieces of the other. Hunter began with Bob Lees stories, then told the first of Earls. Obviously the author has become enamored of both his creations. Unfortunately, Earls adventures maybe at an end after HAVANA. Im willing to bet that Im not the only fan that hopes this isnt so. I do know that THE 47th SAMURAI has chapters in it from Earls point of view, and that the plot revolves around choices both Swaggers face.
HAVANA ends up being more spy story than either of the two previous books about Earl Swagger. I think Hunter had a hard time fitting Earl into the plot in some ways. The previous two books hit harder and were more driven by Earls choices. In this book, Earl seems to be reactive more than proactive.
Everything centers around the unrest in Havana in the 1950s. The United States government has a Central Intelligence Agency operation in place on the island and theyre carefully monitoring the political backlash surging against Carlos Batista, who is friendly toward the Americans. As long as Batista is in control, American companies will flourish there. At one time, Havana was referred to as the Disneyland for adults, referring to the gambling, prostitution, drinking, and drugs available.
The New York Mafia has bested interest in the island government as well. Meyer Lansky was there overseeing mob-related business throughout those turbulent years. Hunter uses the mob-influenced history to his advantage throughout the novel. Theres even a mob hitman working for Lansky who is called Frankie Horse after he gunned down a New York policemen and his mount. The mob bosses didnt like the idea that Frankie had killed the horse. As punishment, he was sent down to Havana.
The story takes a little while to get started. Theres a lot of backstory to set up, but its all important to provide a picture of the political and economic climate of Havana during those years. Hunter obviously did his research well and enjoyed the subject matter.
Earl gets called in by the government to write shotgun for a senator while hes down in Havana. Harry Etheridge is a southern congressman with a taste for prostitutes. Earl doesnt really care for the assignment, but hes tempted when those who hire him point out that he could provide a much different future for his young son and wife. Those two people mean everything to Earl, and thats one of the reasons that I enjoy him so much as a character.
Earl is plainspoken and humble, and his world is black and white. He doesnt drink because he knows he cant handle it. When he fights, he gives everything hes got because he knows nothing less will do. Hes one of the most decorated soldiers to ever come out of the Pacific theater in World War II. And he knows what killings all about.
This story is bigger than the previous two Earl Swagger novels. In the earlier books, the plot remained thin and Earl stayed in the spotlight nearly the whole time through. HAVANA offered up a richly textured series of events and characters that at times eclipsed Earl. I missed having him on the pages, but there was so much else going on that caught my attention.
Hunter also obviously fell in love with Speshnev, a Russian soldier that was freed from a Siberian prison camp. Spesnev became something of a political embarrassment to Moscow and was locked away in spite of his service during World War II. The old Russian is a wily and cunning man gifted with great, dark humor. I found myself wishing that Stephen Hunter would write a book about him at some point just so I can see everywhere Speshnev has been and what he has done.
So Stephen, if youre reading this, know that you already have one fan waiting for that book.
The chemistry between Swagger and Speshnev is electric. I spent much of the book fearing the time they would meet over gun barrels. In the beginning, Speshnev saves Earls butt twice, but I knew that they were working at cross purposes and that conflict would at some point need to be resolved.
Hunter also seems to have great fun poking at the CIAs presence in Havana. The intelligence agency seems to be primarily a joke as he shows the emergence of the new agents the kind of fit the preppy model. But Hunter also gives them one of Earls oldest foes in the form of Frenchy Short, who betrayed Earls team in Hot Springs.
After caring for Senator Etheridge, and getting shot up for his trouble, Earl gets pressured by the CIA to become an assassin and kill Fidel Castro. At the same time, the reader knows that Sheshnev has been sent there to educate young Castro and get him ready to take over Cuba as a communist partner.
Although the reader knows that Earl isnt going to kill Castro, a lot of the story still yet remains to play through. Even without the mystery and suspense of how Earl was going to kill Castro, I stayed glued to my radio as the audio book played. I hated getting out at my stops and often found excuses to run errands that couldve waited or go buy a Coke so I could get through a particularly exciting sequence. The problem was that most of the sequences in the book are exciting and is difficult to leave Earl in any one place after the action gets going.
Readers of the previous two books will know that this one has been done differently. Some may not like it because Earl is off screen so much, but if they hang around till after everything is set up, theyll get to see Earl in his element: hunting men and struggling to stay alive under harsh circumstances.
I had a great time with this book. I hate to think that this is the end of it. I would love to see another novel of Earl any time in here. I would especially love to see a war novel recounting Earls adventures in the Pacific. After Earl returns home to his family in Blue Eye, Arkansas, its not long before hes murdered while carrying out his job as an Arkansas State Trooper, though not in this book. And that gives me hope that another novel may yet be in the offing.
If this is all there is, I appreciate all the great stories. Hunter gives his readers a character that is at once real and ideal. There arent many like him, not in real life and not in fiction.

Alonzo Mourning recently released a new book "Resilience: Faith, Focus, Triumph." The book is personal accounts of his life story, including his battle with the life-threatening kidney disease, focal segmental glomerular sclerosis.
The longtime All-Star center said he's hopeful the 231-page tale can inspire everyday people to overcome whatever challenges they face, much like how cycling champion Lance Armstrong's two books inspired Mourning in his fight against kidney disease.
"Lance was one of the people who inspired me to write this book," Mourning said in an interview with The Associated Press. "He played a big role in my overall approach to coming back and playing the game, reading both of his books, learning more about his life, his experiences and how he dealt with adversity. He motivated millions and millions of people in their lives, and I felt my story could have that same impact."
Mourning went out of his way to ensure that the book wasn't just a chronicle of his years playing college basketball at Georgetown and then his NBA stops in Charlotte, New Jersey and Miami, where he spent the bulk of his career and the team he'd like to return to at some point this season. He's still waiting to determine if he can recover from major injuries to his knee and leg suffered in a fall at Atlanta on Dec. 19, 2007 - the fourth anniversary of the kidney transplant that saved his life.
Mourning has been open about his fight against kidney disease, but the book touches on several other facets of his life, many of which he hasn't discussed at much length publicly before.
Among the highlights:
_ How actor, comedian and philanthropist Bill Cosby helped shape his life by paying for an education at Howard for the woman who would eventually become his wife, Tracy Wilson Mourning.
_ The tribulations of the recruiting trail as a coveted high school player, when Maryland, Syracuse, Virginia and Georgia Tech all wanted him to sign and wooed him with clothes, shoes, fancy dinners, even a trip to a strip club. "Everyone understood I could have gotten money at any of these places. The message was sent," Mourning wrote.
_ The ironic tale of how he was nearly too muscular to get a kidney transplant, because surgeons were having trouble finding a place in his body to put the new organ without cutting copious amounts of muscle. If they'd gone about the procedure that way, Mourning's career would have ended in the operating room.
"Everybody has a story," Mourning said. "And if everybody had an opportunity to put their story on paper, everybody reading those stories would find something that they would connect with. And I know there's so many positive things throughout my whole life that can help inspire and help people overcome certain adversities in their lives."
Mourning said he spent about two years planning and writing the book, some of the proceeds of which will be directed toward kidney transplantation programs and research.
The other words on the cover - faith, focus and triumph - are part of a message that Mourning said believes can be applied by anyone to any situation in life.
"We all are here for one purpose," Mourning said. "We're here to help fellow man and stimulate growth on this earth. That's what we're here for. God created the planets, the trees, the human beings, He put us here to grow and enhance things in a positive way. And there's more to me being on this earth than just being a basketball player. That's not how I want to be remembered.

We may never really know. What I do know is that both parties are aware of the fact that something must be done to correct the countrys financial woes immediately, because if nothing is done right now it will send the U.S. economy into a tailspin which will send the country and the the rest of the whole world into a long drawn recession. I believe the Democrats realize too that such a scenario will not be to their advantage even if they wrest control of the white house by November because by then the job of reviving the economy will be a herculean job and their white house residency may be short lived if they fall short of expectations.
I am sure by now both parties are trying to map out their own strategies to resolve the impasse. I even believe a solution will be had before the week ends. Each of them just want to make sure that the other will not unduly gain politically from the passage of EESA 2008. Already the stock market made the steepest dive since the last depression! Further delays may cause long lasting damage to the U.S. economy and ultimately the rest of the world.
Below is a short summary of EESA 2008 which amazingly, had to come from Xinhua, Chinas Peoples Daily Online (http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001/9 0778/90858/90864/6508590.html):
The following is the summary of U.S. financial bailout bill draft, which will authorize the U.S. government the largest financial intervention since the Great Depression.
I. Stabilizing the Economy
The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA) provides up to 700 billion dollars to the Secretary of the Treasury to buy mortgages and other assets that are clogging the balance sheets of financial institutions and making it difficult for working families, small businesses, and other companies to access credit, which is vital to a strong and stable economy. EESA also establishes a program that would allow companies to insure their troubled assets.
II. Homeownership Preservation
EESA requires the Treasury to modify troubled loans many the result of predatory lending practices wherever possible to help American families keep their homes. It also directs other federal agencies to modify loans that they own or control. Finally, it improves the HOPE for Homeowners program by expanding eligibility and increasing the tools available to the Department of Housing and Urban Development to help more families keep their homes.
III. Taxpayer Protection
Taxpayers should not be expected to pay for Wall Streets mistakes. The legislation requires companies that sell some of their bad assets to the government to provide warrants so that taxpayers will benefit from any future growth these companies may experience as a result of participation in this program. The legislation also requires the President to submit legislation that would cover any losses to taxpayers resulting from this program by charging a small, broad-based fee on all financial institutions.
IV. No Windfalls for Executives
Executives who made bad decisions should not be allowed to dump their bad assets on the government, and then walk away with millions of dollars in bonuses. In order to participate in this program, companies will lose certain tax benefits and, in some cases, must limit executive pay. In addition, the bill limits golden parachutes and requires that unearned bonuses be returned.
V. Strong Oversight
Rather than giving the Treasury all the funds at once, the legislation gives the Treasury 250 billion dollars immediately, then requires the President to certify that additional funds are needed (100 billion dollars, then 350 billion dollars subject to Congressional disapproval). The Treasury must report on the use of the funds and the progress in addressing the crisis. EESA also establishes an Oversight Board so that the Treasury cannot act in an arbitrary manner. It also establishes a special inspector general to protect against waste, fraud and abuse.

What is a yoga lifestyle? Attending a bunch of yoga classes every week? Wearing tight yoga pants and, every time you get a chance, flinging silk scarves made in India around your shoulders? If I say Namaste? when I greet someone, or Om Shanti when I leave, does that make me a yogi?
While all of the above choices are perfectly in line with the newly-born and rapidly expanding yoga culture, yoga lifestyle means something entirely different. It has nothing to do with the style of yoga people practice, their style of clothing, the type of work they are involved in, or anything else that is externally imposed by fads and culture.

The Rev. Greg Hogan flew from Ohio to Maryland to tell the story of Greg Hogan Jr., his 19-year-old son, who had won an international piano competition and was president of his sophomore class at Lehigh. One night a student came into his room and claimed he won $120,000 by Internet gambling.
Within minutes, he posted a link on Gregs computer. That began Gregs gambling through the $8,000 he came to college with. He began borrowing from friends, but could never pay them back. As he told Good Morning America, I felt pressure to come up with the funds.
So he robbed a bank! I thought if I could pay off my debts, I would stop gambling forever. However, if I had more money, my addiction would probably not have let me stop, he confessed to a national TV audience.
Greg was asked, Why didnt you ask your parents for help? His father answered, We learned he had a gambling addiction the summer before, and got him help. He went to Gamblers Anonymous. I didnt realize how firm a grip addiction had on my son.
Within hours of the robbery, he was arrested as he arrived to play cello in an orchestra. He served 22 months in prison, and is out now but with a ruined life.

There was a free bowling and billiards held in bull pen in 20 th of this month form 9 to 12 pm, which was sponsered by bull pen itself.During regular days it was hard to find even few people in the area but it was almost pakced in after dark event.
Even I was intrested in billiard so I went to hang around. But I was surprised to see,all the billiard board being packed(which used to be mostly vacant before).May be all due to free events.Which symbolises the money concern of US citizens.
Firstly, I was on a queue for more than half an hour to get a billiard board vacant. Then finally there came my turn.I was playing with one of my frn sashi. It was my break.I was almost about to win the game but at the last hour I did a foul and he won. Then he challanged me a game for a Pizzz. Now that was more exiting. Both playing under pressure was tremendously good experience. But he was far better to play with me.Then I lossed a Pizza.
Getitng down with the game I went to Bowling which I had never done before. However we waited there for 20 minutes. Then we statred playing,I had four strike eventhoug my friend got over me.
Then it was about to be midnight and the time for CSU to close. Then the game was over and we came back home.
I was really a good experience being there.I got to see everyone enjoying the game. And it was really a cool weekend.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, out this weekend, is a charming entry into a time-honored movie subgenre: the One Crazy Night movie. You know the type: Over the course of one incredible evening, our heroes will drive around, find adventure, listen to some tunes, and maybe just maybe fall in love. Nick and Norah features all the hallmarks of the classic One Crazy Night movie. It's got an unexpected hero who steals the show: Norah's drunken best friend, played by Ari Graynor. It's got authority figures to rebel against: Norah's unseen father, some kind of record-company bigwig. It's got wild late-night encounters (with pantsless altar boys, Devendra Banhart, and a vomit-filled Port Authority toilet). And it ends, as all One Crazy Night movies should, the quiet morning after, with dawn just breaking over Manhattan.
For all their flaws formulaic storytelling, crude caricatures, senseless wackiness One Crazy Night movies often becomes generational touchstones. We've come up with our ten favorites, after the jump and it was hard to narrow it down. Believe it or not, we didn't even have room for Adventures in Babysitting.

After 3-plus quarters of offensive inefficiency, the Kentucky Wildcats actually found themselves in a position to not lose to Alabama at the end of regulation on Saturday. All Kentucky needed to do to capitalize on their opportunity was recover an onside kick; never the easiest of options, but an option nonetheless.
Enter Lones Seiber, Kentuckys ex-place kicker, reduced to extra point duties after being replaced by Ryan Tydlacka. Despite his heroics against LSU last season, Seiber has struggled mightily with his kicking duties, hence the relegation to extra points. Despite that, Seiber retained UKs onside kicking responsibilities, although after the following effort, Rich Brooks is probably rethinking his decision.

Erick Aybar's 12th-inning single off Javier Lopez gave the Angels a 5-4 victory and extended the American League Division Series to a fourth game. The Angels' victory ended an 11-game postseason losing streak to the Red Sox, and also put an end to more than five hours of baseball at Fenway Park.
Aybar's single plated Mike Napoli, who hit two home runs earlier in the game and led off the inning with a single. Napoli moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Howie Kendrick.
Before Lopez entered the game in the 12th, Red Sox relievers Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, Justin Masterson and Jonathan Papelbon worked six scoreless innings after taking over for ineffective starter Josh Beckett, who had the worst postseason outing of his career. But Angels relievers outdid the Boston bullpen, putting in 7.2 innings of scoreless work after Joe Saunders left the game in the fifth. Jered Weaver, known as a starter, pitched the 11th and the 12th to earn the win.
The Red Sox had some good chances to win the game. They left the bases loaded off Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez in the 10th inning, when Jed Lowrie lined out to right field. In the bottom of the 11th, Dustin Pedroia hit a scorching line drive right at third baseman Chone Figgins, who threw to strand Coco Crisp at second.
Papelbon got out of a two-on, one-out situation in the top of the 11th. After striking out Garret Anderson, Papelbon walked Mark Teixeira and allowed a single up the middle by Vladimir Guerrero. But Torii Hunter flew out weakly to right field and Gary Matthews Jr. then became Papelbon's third strikeout victim of the night.
Rodriguez, who avoided a third straight postseason walkoff loss to the Red Sox, started the 10th inning by striking out the slumping Pedroia, who remains without a hit in the series. He then walked David Ortiz and gave up a solid single to Kevin Youkilis. After striking out Jason Bay, Rodriguez walked Mike Lowell, ball four coming on a very close pitch that apparently just missed the outside corner. Lowell came out of the game for pinch runner Alex Cora. Lowrie got ahead of the count with the bases loaded and made solid contact, but the ball went right to Matthews.
Papelbon entered the game and blew away the Angels in the top of the 10th, retiring the side in order and preserving a 4-4 tie in Game 3 of the ALDS. Papelbon, throwing in the high 90s, ended the inning by striking out Chone Figgins on a called strike three.
Scot Shields retired the Sox 1-2-3 in the ninth inning for the second consecutive inning, striking out pinch hitter J.D. Drew (subbing for Jason Varitek) for his third strikeout, then getting Crisp and Jacoby Ellsbury to fly out. Shields has retired all seven batters he's faced since entering the game in the seventh inning.
Hunter led off the Angels' half of the ninth inning with a hit, but he was easily thrown out by left fielder Jason Bay trying to stretch the single into a double. Given a reprieve, Masterson retired pinch hitter Kendry Morales and Napoli to end the inning with the score tied in Game 3 of the ALDS.
In the eighth, Masterson struck out Vladimir Guerrero with the go-ahead run on first base and two outs.
Masterson had come on after Okajima had given up a two-out single to Teixeira.
The score has been tied at 4-4 since the bottom of the fifth inning, when Kevin Youkilis' two-out double to center scored Ellsbury, who had led off with a double.
Mike Napoli had hit his second home run of the night with one out in the fifth, giving the Angels a 4-3 lead. In the third inning, he had tied the game with a two-run homer on a 3-and-2 pitch with two out. Both home runs were hit into the Monster Seats in left field. They were the first two hits of Napoli's career against Beckett.
With the Red Sox leading 3-1, Guerrero had opened the third with a double. Beckett retired Hunter (strikeout) and Juan Rivera (pop out) before Napoli's homer.
In the bottom of the second, the Red Sox had been given three gift runs when Hunter, second baseman Kendrick and shortstop Aybar called each other off and let Ellsbury's catchable pop to short center field drop among them, clearing the bases.
With two outs, the Sox had loaded the bases when Angels starter Joe Saunders sandwiched walks to Jed Lowrie and Crisp around a single by Varitek.
The Elias Sports Bureau reports it was the first three-run single in Major League Baseball postseason history.
The Angels broke on top early against Beckett, scoring a run on a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Rivera.
Figgins hit Beckett's first pitch of the game on one hop into the seats near the right-field foul pole for a ground-rule double. It looked as if he might stay there, however, as Beckett struck out both Anderson and Teixeira.
He pitched carefully to Guerrero and walked him, however, and then gave up an infield single to Hunter -- it was a slow grounder to the right side for which Youkilis ranged far to his right but couldn't snare; Dustin Pedroia tracked it down on the edge of the outfield grass, but had no play at first -- that loaded the bases. Rivera then walked on five pitches, forcing in the game's first run.
Beckett escaped further damage by retiring Napoli on a grounder to short.
The Angels also put two men on in the second; Beckett got out it by retiring the hot-hitting Teixeira on a grounder to third.
In the fourth, another messed-up infield grounder to the right side with two out -- this one coming when Beckett failed to get close enough to tag the bag after taking a throw from Youkilis on a ground ball by Teixeira -- gave the Angels a first-and-second, two-out chance. Guerrero then walked on four pitches, loading the bases. But Beckett retired Hunter on a grounder to second to end the threat.
Through four innings, the Angels stranded eight runners. Beckett -- nowhere near his normal dominating postseason self -- allowed seven hits and four walks in those four innings. His pitch count was 92.

Coming off a huge 45-20 victory over rival Miami (Oxford, Ohio) the Bearcats travel to play another in state opponent in Akron. Two years ago UC defeated Akron here in Cincinnati 20-14. The last time UC traveled north to Akron was in 1989, which was the last time UC played in the famed Rubber Bowl. This season will be the last for the Zips at the Rubber Bowl. They're moving to an on campus stadium next year.
Can Tony Pike continue playing at the level he played last weekend? He threw only four incompletions in the win over Miami, and two of them were throwaways. Pike showed everyone his elusiveness and his ability to make plays outside the pocket (both of which I had concerns about heading ito the game). Will the defense be able to get off the field on third down? I'll examine both of those points soon.
1. "Trap Game"
The Cincinnati Enquirer's Bill Koch used this phrase when he referred to this week's game earlier today. Can UC come in mentally "fired up" and beat Akron? Sure it's easy to be excited about the first game (albeit against a lower division opponent) and it's easy to get pumped when you're playing the number four (now number two) team in the nation, and it's easy to get excited when playing a huge rival, but will UC be able to fire themselves up to play their second straight MAC opponent in a row? Well, if last year tells me anything, I'd say yes. The Bearcats were plenty fired up to play against Marshall (after beating Miami) and San Diego State (in San Diego). If they can duplicate the success of last season the Bearcats will be well on their way to finally having a national ranking.
2. Earn Respect
Did I mention UC isn't ranked? But, the Bearcats received votes this week in the USA Today poll. Beating Akron handily will help the Bearcats gain a little more respect in the eyes of national voters, who only saw the beatdown that Oklahoma put on the 'Cats. Last season was the first season that a UC team finished ranked in the top 25. If UC can wipe out their next two opponents, and head into Big East play with a 4-1 record, then they will be able to only gain more respect as they trudge through the Big East schedule. (However, what looked to be a big game against Rutgers may end up being a blowout, unless Rutgers gets it together here soon)
3. "D-fense... D-fense"
To say Coach Kelly wasn't happy with the defense in the first half of last week's game would probably be an understatement. The defense has to be more consistent this week against Akron. Sure first and second down went well against Miami, but third downs were a killer. Coach Kelly credited Miami, but also said, "We have to get better this week," on last night's coaches show. I think the Bearcats will need to come out of the gate with an attitude to be completely effective on third downs.
4. Defense, part 2
No, not the Bearcats defense, but the Akron defense is anothe key to this game. Akron plays a 3-3 "stack" defense, similar to the style that Rich Rodriguez was so successful with at West Virginia. The Bearcats have been scheming all week and preparing for Akron, who may try to use their speed defensively to try and thwart Tony Pike's passing attempts.
5. Tony Pike's follow-up performance
Tony Pike did more than he needed to do against the Redhawks to win the game. I said he had to be effective, and he was more than that. Pike played unbelievably well, and when I talked to QB Coach Greg Forest on Sunday he was very pleased with Pike's performance. He said if it weren't for the dropped ball and tipped pass (Pike's only mistake of the day) that it would have been a perfect night for the kid from Reading High School. And then we went on to watch the final 50 laps of the NASCAR race from Dover. (Look, anytime I can get NASCAR and UC Football in the same vicinity, I'm going to do it!)
UC offense vs Akron defense
As I just stated, UC needs to play well against Akrons speed on defense. Coach Kelly thinks that their linebackers will be able to make plays all across the field and has schemed accordingly. The 3-3-5 defense might allow UC to open up the running game. John Goebel looked impressive in the game against Miami, and his counterpart Jacob Ramsey looked good too. Can they look even better against Akron? We'll wait and see. Expect the running game to set up the play action passing by the 'Cats. (That might be the first time I've ever typed that!)
UC defense vs Akron offense
UC's defense needs to get off the field on the first Zips drive of the game in order to regain some confidence, and dare I say, swagger, for the second straight week in a row. Ryan Manalac had one heck of a game against Miami. It seemed everytime I saw a Miami player going to the ground, number 45 was in on the tackle. If "Manny" can come out and set the tone this game, as he did last game, UC should be in pretty good shape. Connor Barwin has three sacks this season, and he looks to improve that number going up against Akron's offensive line. Look for Akron to runs some shotgun triple option and speed options as well as use their play action pass to keep Joe Tresey's (UC Defesneive coordinator) boys on their toes.
Special Teams
Punting/Punt Returns
-UC didn't punt once during the Miami game. If they need to this week, will Mike Windt and Kevin Huber have their timing down after a three week off time in game situations? I think they will, and remember, Huber is still in the running for the Ray Guy award.
Kickoffs/Returns
-UC has worked all week on kicking the ball away from Mardy Gilyard, and making plays with other returners. Teams have stayed away from Gilyard since his record setting day in Oklahoma. What happened? Well, the first kickoff against Miami was returned by John Goebel for a long gain.
PAT's/Field Goals
-Jake Rogers should be the kicker this week. After last week's performance, he has pretty much settled himslef in as the number on kicker once more. He nailed a 55-yarder on Tuesday in practice, furthering the proof that he has one strong leg.
Well, I think this week's game could get ugly in a hurry. If UC's running attack is on mark, then expect to see a fairly open array of running plays from Coach Kelly and the offensive staff. Depending on how well the defense plays, this game could be out of hand at halftime. But, likewise, it could be close.
I think it will be something like last week.
