We were clipping along, all having a good time, and we came upon this puddle. There was A LOT of water in it. There was a really mucky path to the left of it, and a very dry and smooth path to the right of it. I was instructed, by 2 people, to STAY TO THE LEFT, it is very deep! I questioned the right path, and was again instructed to stay left. So I listened to them, as they were already on the other side. I started off fine, but the mule is a lot wider than their quads, it hit a rut and sucked us into the puddle-abyss. Of course the passenger side is what went in first...where my 2 boys are buckled in! Zack's arm dunked into the water, and they were at this point SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER. I fully understand, it was rather scary! Tom, Danny and Tory were across the puddle, watching this take place, and everyone else was behind me. I hurled myself out of the mule, and got to the other side (I still have no idea which way I went, as I can't actually remember that part) I was standing in the puddle, waist deep in dark murky muddy water, while my kids were both crying hysterically. I was holding the mule up with my left hand, andmy kids with my right. The wheels were off of the ground on the drivers side, and the whole right side of the mule was submerged. I managed to get the boys unbuckled, and handed them off to the people behind me (they all ran up behind me at some point, but I can't remember that, either). I kept a firm grip on the roll cage, as that was keeping it from dumping even more into the water. I got both boys safely out, and Frank grabbed my arm and helped me out of the abyss. Tom was, at that point, in the mule trying to crank it over, to no avail. We had the Jeep behind us, and they hooked up a tow rope. Tom was in the drivers seat, Danny, Frank and Tory were standing on the drivers side (and that is what it took to level that sucker out!) The Jeep was spinning its tires, sliding all over the trail trying to free the demon-beast from the man-made lake/puddle. Finally, after the third try, it was freed. I can't honestly remember what happened after that...I think someone drove it around the right side path (the one I had intended on taking, but was told otherwise) and we got back to it. Zack was now riding with Shar, and Jesse was petrified, and crying, and riding with me.

The remainder of Main Street between First and Second Streets to the east of the recently announced Os project and the hot-off-the-presses Whiskey Row Lofts is still slated to be planned to be hoped to be the Iron Quarter, the project with the biggest entrance onto the development scene followed by the quickest retreat.  The buildings comprising the Iron Quarter will be torn down (except for those facades, mind you) if the project goes through, so a leaky roof slowly eating away at the interior and structure of the buildings should be no biggie right?  Problem is, after the University of Louisville spurned the project for its new Graduate School of Business instead running over to the Museum Plaza, its looking more and more like Humanas decision where to expand its downtown offices will be the make-it-or-break-it moment.  The Iron Quarter does have location ostensibly on its side as its located next door to Humanas riverside campus, but the carrot the insurance giant is dangling in front of developers has spawned oh so many proposals for office towers in the area that a few will get their hearts broken.  The base of the Iron Quarter faces an uphill battle as well for retailers.  Cobalt Ventures, the development force behind the proposal, wants to see upscale retailers new to the Louisville market sign up for the building.  They envision a sort of tiny urban mall around an atrium that brings to mind a miniature Time Warner Center in the Big Apple.  Thats going to be a challenging aspect of the project, but one that could really set Louisvilles urban core apart from its peer cities and create a real retail destination.  If the project for some reason falls through, that leaky roof will become a major pain.  In the event that a wont be part of the future plans of the site, a weakened and water damaged interior will make redevelopment even more difficult.

Sadly, I was a huge Ron Artest fan and I cheered him on from my home computer and television. However, with his attitude and the mounting chips on his shoulder, I fear he is at the beginning of the end of his career. The SX rear-wheel drive variants (4×2) are available as single cab/chassis and crew cab ute. Moving up to the 4×4, choice exists between single cab/chassis and crew cab/chassis. Like the ES, the SX range is available only with a five-speed manual transmission.

The Tokyo based company hopes to build on that reputation but also has other ways of tempting Australian customers. The diesel powerplant offers the best combined fuel economy rating at 7.9 litres/100km, making the D-MAX 4×2 the most fuel frugal of all the 3+ litre entrants in the one-tonne ute class. The 4×4 variants manage at 8.1 litres/100km, the best result for a 4×4 one-tonner in Australia. Reliability should not be an issue but for peace of mind, all D-MAX models come with a three year/100,000km warranty and backed by 24/7 roadside assistance during this period.

On the other hand, professional football players are able to demand a significant amount of money by endorsing or promoting a business product.
Unfortunately, like all professional athletes, not ever football player is an exceptional role model prepared for the global attention. Similar to other sports, many professional football players get caught using illegal substances, either for recreation or to enhance sports performance. In addition, battery and fighting are other unfortunate occurrences often associated with rowdy players.
However, its important not to stereotype football players by the poor choices made by a few immature athletes. Even with the corruption involved in professional football, the sport provides great benefits for all of the players. Aside from the obvious physical fitness benefits and the potential financial benefits of playing a sport professionally, the game provides an inspiration for people of all ages to commit to something larger than themselves.

The Phillies right-hander, not known for his hitting prowess, induced a cheer from the crowd after fouling off a pitch early in the at-bat. After a lengthy battle with Sabathia, Myers walked on a 3-2 count. Then Sabathia failed to find the plate on four pitches to Jimmy Rollins, which loaded the bases. The next batter, Shane Victorino, teed off for a grand slam. Philadelphia scored five times in the second in a 5-2 win. The one inning doomed the Brewers, who go home down two games to none.
It’s possible pitching on three days’ rest for a fourth consecutive time may have caught up with Sabathia, who allowed six hits and walked four in 3.2 innings Thursday. He’d allowed a total of just four walks in his four previous starts -- a span of 28.2 innings. If there was any chance of the postseason convincing Sabathia to stay in Milwaukee next year, it may have gone out the window.
After having an MVP-worthy second half with the Dodgers, Manny Ramirez continued his hot-hitting ways in Los Angeles’ two victories over the Cubs. He’s homered in each postseason game, and Thursday night’s power blast landed on the roof of the batting eye in deep center at Wrigley Field, more than 450 feet from home plate. His first homer in Game 1 didn’t travel as far, but was equally impressive.
Ramirez was out in front of an offspeed pitch in the seventh inning of Game 1. With his weight on his front leg, he adjusted to a diving offering headed for dirt -- a good pitcher’s pitch -- and put enough of a swing on it to golf it into the Wrigley’s bleacher seats. It didn’t take long to leave the premises, either. How does he do that?
“I’m just being Manny,” Manny told reporters after the game. Being Manny is required to hit that pitch out with that kind of power.
In Game 1 of the Tampa Bay-Chicago series Thursday, there was drama beyond home runs, RBIs and lost command. With the Rays leading 6-3 in the seventh inning, reliever Grant Balfour entered the game with the sacks loaded with White Sox and only one out.
Balfour, who often looks as though he’s spent way too much time at the clubhouse coffee machine before the game, fanned Juan Uribe to record the second out of the inning. Up stepped Chicago shortstop Orlando Cabrera, with a late chance to close the gap.
After Balfour missed the strike zone with the first pitch, Cabrera stepped forward, kicked dirt and plenty of chalk toward the mound, and barked at the pitcher. The hard-throwing right-hander stepped toward home and barked back.
It seemed unprovoked, but Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune shed light on what inspired the minor dustup. According to Rogers, Balfour “happens to scream a certain four-letter word after just about every pitch he throws. He let loose with one of his self-directed obscenities after throwing an outside fastball to Cabrera.”
Balfour told Rogers that Cabrera responded to the blue language by ordering him to “throw it over the plate.” Balfour, who has a certain something in common with Al Hrabosky, had plenty to say back as he approached the mound. Umpire Joe West had to intercept him on his way to the plate.
The Rays reliever threw three of the next four pitches for strikes and fanned Cabrera on a 2-2 fastball. Balfour pumped his fist and pointed at the White Sox shortstop. What did he have to say as he walked off the field?
“Go sit down,” is what Balfour told Rogers, who asked if that’s exactly what he said. “I might have mixed in one or two words with it,” Balfour conceded.
“They say that he always gets pumped up like that,” Cabrera said after the game. “I didn’t know that, so I just got mad a little bit. . . It was just heat of the moment.” Balfour can heat up any situation.
Meanwhile, the Cubs have already had one of those once-in-a-century moments in the playoffs. Winning its first title in a century looks all but impossible now, but in Thursday’s Game 2 loss, each of the Cubs’ four infielders committed an error, leading to five unearned runs in a 10-3 loss to the Dodgers.
The last time a team's entire infield committed an error in a postseason game was Game 1 of the 1934 World Series between Detroit and St. Louis. Tigers first baseman Hank Greenberg, second baseman Charlie Gehringer, shortstop Billy Rogell and third baseman Marv Owen each made an error.
It marked the first time the Cubs have had each of their infielders commit an error in a game since April 27, 1977. In a 21-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field, first baseman Larry Biittner, second baseman Manny Trillo, shortstop Ivan DeJesus and third baseman Steve Ontiveros each committed a miscue.
The timing of this week's feat will give the curse a new storyline if the Cubs are eliminated by the Dodgers. The franchise’s history already features a black cat and the 1969 collapse, as well as a key grounder through the legs of first baseman Leon Durham and the personal curse of Steve Garvey in 1984.
Five years ago, an Alex Gonzalez error in Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS against the Marlins sabotaged the Cubs’ chances of securing a trip to the World Series in six games. Chicago was up 3-0 in the eighth inning, but the error was part of an eight-run inning by Florida. The Marlins made it two straight at Wrigley Field in Game 7 the following night, and went on to win the second World Series title in Florida’s brief history
Gonzalez’s error was every bit as costly as Durham’s, but it’s all but forgotten because a guy named Steve Bartman innocently went for a foul ball that no one on the field had a legitimate chance of catching. Of course, the Bartman angle makes for more drama in covering the century-long troubles of the Cubs.
Now the four errors and the Cubs’ looming 2008 failure will join the lore. The team looked tight in a must-win situation Thursday, facing a Dodgers club that has been on top of its game for more than a month. After Thursday night’s victory, the Dodgers have won 21 of their last 29 games. The starters have a 2.83 ERA in this stretch, and Derek Lowe and Chad Billingsley were better pitchers than Ryan Dempster and Carlos Zambrano in the first two games.
Speaking of the Cubs, TBS should dump the obsession with close-ups of distraught Cubs fans in the late innings of playoff games. This has become a broadcast staple since Moises Alou attempted that impossible catch at Wrigley Field in 2003.
The Cubs have lost eight playoff games in a row, a streak that began with the Cubs up three games to one in that NLCS with the Marlins. So there’s been ample opportunity to bombard TV audiences with crest-fallen Cubs fans, but it’s a rare soul on the planet who’s old enough to carry the weight of 100 years of failure. So quit feeding the myth of the star-crossed Cubs and the lifelong angst of their fans, who live under some sort of curse. There’s a game going on.

In June 1997, both Palin and I had responsibilities at the graduation ceremony of a small group of Wasilla area home schoolers. I directed the Mat-Su College Community Band, which played music, and she gave the commencement address. It was held at her church, the Wasilla Assembly of God.


Palin had recently become Wasilla mayor, beating her earliest mentor, John Stein, the then-incumbent mayor. A large part of her campaign had been to enlist fundamentalist Christian groups, and invoke evangelical buzzwords into her talks and literature.

As the ceremony concluded, I bumped into her in a hall away from other people. I congratulated her on her victory, and took her aside to ask about her faith. Among other things, she declared that she was a young earth creationist, accepting both that the world was about 6,000-plus years old, and that humans and dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time.


I asked how she felt about the second coming and the end times. She responded that she fully believed that the signs of Jesus returning soon "during MY lifetime," were obvious. "I can see that, maybe you can't - but it guides me every day."


Our next discussion about religion was after she had switched to the less strict Wasilla Bible Church. She was speaking at, I was performing bugle, at a Veterans ceremony between Wasilla and Palmer. At this time, people were beginning to encourage her to run for Governor.

Once again, we found ourselves being able to talk privately. I reminded her of the earlier conversation, asking her if her views had changed. She was no longer "necessarily" a young earth creationist, she told me. But she strongly reiterated her belief that "The Lord is coming soon." I was trying to get her to tell me what she felt the signs were, when she had to move on.

Meet Alan Veingrad. Offensive lineman. Green Bay Packer. Dallas Cowboy. Champion.

Alan, winner of Super Bowl XXVII as a member of the 1992 Dallas Cowboys, had a great life. "A life that anybody would have wanted," as he put it. He was a gifted athlete with a wonderful personal life. He had grown from a normal kid living in South Florida into one of the most successful athletes in the world.

And yet there always seemed to be someone else beside him. Someone walking with him on his journey from Florida to college in Texas to the Pros. It watched him as he grew up, practiced with him as he groomed himself into a master lineman, it even sat with him as he went fishing. Who was this? Who was watching him, who was practicing with him, who went fishing with him?

Meet Shlomo Veingrad.

Jew.

When Alan was young, he hardly noticed Shlomo. He thought all Shlomo needed was a Bar Mitzvah. All he needed was "the big party. And that was it." When people started asking him questions about Shlomo, he couldn't be bothered. "Why eight days of Chanukah? Not only do I not know, I don't care."

And yet, Shlomo kept by him, kept sitting with him, kept working with him. Every now and then he would peak his head up, often when Alan least expected it. People would tell him things like, "'You guys are the chosen ones.'" Alan could not help but notice Shlomo then and, as he put it, "My pride in Judaism would soar!" It was incidents such as these that helped him realize that Shlomo was a part of him, even if he hadn't quite understood this strange person yet.

He "always felt that there is something you have to do as related to being Jewish." As time went on, he felt this more and more.

Shlomo kept quiet for much of Alan's life. Shlomo let him grow as a football player, watched as he won the Super Bowl with Troy Aikman. He even cheered him on. All the time, he waited patiently.

And then Alan retired.

Retirement--A New Beginning

"When you leave the pros, it's a huge transition playing professional football to being a regular guy." Alan, using the discipline he learned from football, "started learning another industry in real estate." He was playing golf, was married with children and life was "pretty good."

Somehow, though, as time went on, something didn't feel right. Something was missing since he left football. "I was starving for inspiration. As an athlete, I had that, but as a human being I didn't have that." It was not until his cousin invited him to Shabbat that things started to change.

It was Alan's first Shabbat.

Even as Alan ate his "teriyaki salmon, and the chicken and the brisket" and ignored a child at the table giving a speech about what he learned at school that week, Shlomo sat back patiently, waiting for his moment.

At the end of the meal, Alan's cousin invited him to a Torah class. More out of obligation than anything, Alan responded, "I said 'okay', I would go to one class."

As Alan walked into his first Torah study of his life, he could not help but be distracted by the beautiful house he had walked into. Just as at his cousin's house, he was more interested in the material than in whatever spirituality was being offered to him. This time, instead of teriyaki salmon, he was focused on the square feet of the house. This time, instead of ignoring a child, he was ignoring the rabbi.

But this time, something hit him. This time, Shlomo was not waiting around quietly anymore. This time, Alan had to listen. Because this time, the rabbi's words spoke directly to Shlomo through Alan and pulled on both their hearts.

"He was talking about materialism. And materialism in your life can lead you to a very shallow existence. And you want that next thing. Once you get that next thing, you'll want another thing. It's just not going to fulfill you. And that's exactly where I was."

The very focus of Alan's life, the very things he was most interested in had suddenly been exposed for what they were. Teriyaki salmon and big houses suddenly didn't seem as exciting. And, surprisingly, the very Torah he had ignored for so long seemed more exciting than he had ever imagined.

Becoming a Mentch

Alan immediately jumped into this fresh experience. "I went to the next class, and he [the rabbi] gave me my first Chumash." As he went forward in his studies, Alan grew more and more focused. Slowly, internally, he helped Shlomo grow, he inspired himself through Torah, and learned "what is it going to do me. How is it going to hit me right in my gut and make me a mentch. How is it going to make me better." Suddenly, Alan began to notice Shlomo, and together, they worked to help each other grow.

"It was not until 2001 when I met a couple Chabad rabbis and I went to their homes for Shabbat. I started going to their houses more and more and more until it was almost every week." As Alan began to understand Shlomo, he did more and more to help Shlomo come alive. He realized he could take "this feeling of Shabbat and stretch it throughout the entire week."

And so, with this in mind, Alan, invited by a friend to come visit Israel, began to truly stretch out his inspiration, to truly invite Shlomo to share his life. "I got on an airplane and I put on a yarmulke," Alan finally let Shlomo out of his shell. From that day forth, Alan always wore a yarmulke. From that day forth Alan and Shlomo became true partners.

While Shlomo inspired Alan, Alan taught Shlomo how to be a champion. Alan "had been groomed with many, many years of discipline and work ethic and focus and sacrifice, to give things." Alan knew what it meant to work for the Ultimate Goal. And now, he was going to teach it to Shlomo.

Alan taught Shlomo how to prepare, how to get into game mode. He taught Shlomo that being a champion meant work. It meant preparation. Alan taught Shlomo that, "As a football player, it takes six hard days to prepare yourself properly for a game." Just as one of Alan's favorite coaches once taught him, Alan now told Shlomo, "You need to be dressed ready to go. You need to have your workout book with you." As Alan helped Shlomo, they both grew together. Every time they progressed, just as when Alan used to weight train, they became inspired. Every time they saw the results, they became more and more excited.

It did not take long for the people close to Shlomo to begin to realize his presence and inspirational journey. Towards the end of his father's life, Shlomo began inviting his father more and more to spend Shabbat with him. After some resistance, he finally gave in. As Shlomo put it, "He saw, he tasted." His father finally saw Shlomo shine. "He was truly inspired. He saw what I saw and he was growing." His father had never been prouder.

One day, Shlomo's father, who had seen his son grow from a young student in Florida, to a successful college football player in Texas to a Super Bowl champion, turned to him and said, "I'm prouder of you wearing a yarmulke than I ever was with a football helmet on your head."

Shlomo explained: "You have to understand who this was coming from. It was coming from a very proud father. A father who made sure every game I ever played was video taped. A man who watched every game. He was my biggest fan. He never walked out of the house without my football card in his pocket."

It was this father, a father who had so many reasons to be proud of his son that told Shlomo this. Shlomo had won the Super Bowl. He had experienced things most of us only dream of experiencing. And yet, when his father said this, nothing in the world meant more to him.

It is no surprise, then, that Shlomo realized he and Alan could use their journey to inspire others. Shlomo, probably one of the most articulate football players ever to emerge from the NFL realized the power of what he had been through, and became committed to telling his story. He understood why he had stayed hidden so long and why Alan did not let him out until later: "I think the reason I played, I think the reason I am wearing a Super Bowl ring, is to tell somebody my story."

Shlomo now travels around the world telling his story to anyone who will listen. With his powerful presence and charismatic personality, he has helped change many Jewish lives, helping others grow. He has gone from being a champion in the game of football to a champion of Judaism.

Even with all this, it would probably be fair to ask Shlomo whether he misses his old life. He had a lot, and now his life is significantly different. Shlomo has indeed been asked this many times since he and Alan became partners. In response, he simply says there's nothing better, including winning the Super Bowl, than "Sharing your story with somebody with the hopes of after they hear your story the will say, 'you know, Shlomo, I've struggled with wearing a yarmulke, but now that I've heard you speak I am going to wear my yarmulke full time.'"

Speaking of Poland: here is a recipe for Duck soup(Czarnina)!
Kill a duck and catch its blood in a bowl containing about1/2 c vinegar. Stir to prevent the blood from coagulating.(Pigs blood also may be used.) Put some pork spareribs in a pan, add the wing tips, necks, and giblets(and, if desired, the plucked and cleaned head and the feet) of the fowl. Cover the meat with water, boil, and skim. Tie a stalk of celery, some parsley, a small onion, a few allspice, peppercorns, and cloves in cheesecloth or muslin and add to the soup and simmer for about 2 hours. Remove the spice sack and add some dried prunes, dried apples, or dried pears, and some cherries or grapes and simmer for about 1/2 hour. In an electric blender, blend about 2T flour, 1/2C of the blood, and 3T of the soup stock. Stir this into the soup. Add a little sugar and a cup of cream and bring to a boil. Serve with potato dumplings or with noodles.
Naturally for Lame duck soup you will have to increase the ingredients, seeing how a standard duck is 5-7 Pounds. One lame duck weighs in at, about 175 pounds. We all have calculators these days though, do the math! The cooking time will be increased as well, so dont wait until you are already hungry to start this dish!

As we approach Week 6 of the high school football season tonight, I admit I've got Philly on the brain.
I've been there four of the last five days, battling the Expressway and Blue Route (both were jammed Thursday night), battling obnoxious and drunken fans in the Citizens Bank Park parking lot and having nightmares involving all of those white towels the Phillies fans are waving at these NLDS playoff games.
I even picked up one of the towels that was left in a stack in the pressbox and took it home with me.
No, this lifelong Cardinals fan isn't going to be converted and won't be waving the towel above my head as I go about my day. Nor will I be draping it around my neck the way Easton football coach Steve Shiffert does.
No, I have a few other uses for it. For instance, it's perfect to wipe some of the bird off the window shield of my car. I could find some uses for it in the bathroom as well.
But maybe the best use for it is to wipe clean my crystal ball as I look ahead to the second half of the HS football regular season. The first half has seen more than its share of surprises -- the rise of Bangor and Northampton, the perfection of Emmaus, the three losses by Parkland etc., etc.
I am sure there's a few more shockers along the way and I'm even forecasting one tonight -- Nazareth over Easton. I'm covering the game and I'm sure if the Red Rovers roll they'll let me know how dumb I am. That's usually how I know people are still reading the paper, they let me know when I make a bad prediction on a football game. Never does, Hey Groller, you're a pompous bleep sound better.
Didn't have many bad picks last week, going 19-5 to improve my seasonal record to 87-36, for a so-so 70.7 percent.
Would love to have a clean sweep, just like the Phillies are headed to over the Brewers. Let me wave that rally towel.

Nazareth 28, Easton 21: Blue Eagles are 3-2, let me repeat, 3-2. I know it'll get tougher from here on, but Rob Melosky and his veteran coaching staff must be doing something right. I'll be heading up there to Leh Stadium to watch this one myself and see if this team is for real.
Freedom 24, Northampton 21: Hopefully, the Patriots have stopped celebrating that big win over Parkland by now because the Konkrete Kids are for real, too, and won't back down.
Liberty 42, Becahi 14: Hurricanes are set to take out two years of frustration.

Descended from Choctaw, Glover says black people and American Indians have a pivotal past.

Actor Danny Glover on Friday called on the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma to allow freedmen descendants into the tribe with full citizenship rights. Speaking at a forum hosted by members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Glover said other tribes will take similar action if the Cherokee Nation succeeds in blocking freedmen descendants' tribal citizenship.

The issue is in court after a March 2007 vote by the Cherokee Nation to remove freedmen descendants from tribal rolls. Glover described the relationship linking American Indians and black people as one of the most pivotal in the nation's evolution. "I've always embraced that relationship," he said. "My own grandmother was part Choctaw." He cited the history of black people who escaped their captors and found refuge among the Indian tribes, as well as the strategic help black people offered the Seminoles in their war against the tyranny of the colonies.

Both groups, Glover said, have seen genocide and exploitation. "But I am disturbed by what I see," he said, calling on black people to serve as the moral compass on such issues as the freedmen descendants' quest to have full citizenship rights in the Cherokee Nation. "These are very important decisions that we have to make. They are moral decisions."

Glover later said he has been interested in issues involving black people and American Indians for some time and tries to express that both in his work as an actor and as a private person. "It is a relationship that we don't have a great deal of discussion about," he said, adding that his own culture encouraged him to deny it. Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith also gave a hallway interview as the forum took place. Smith said he had asked to be included in the forum's panel but was turned down. "That may be the heart of the problem," he said, calling for all parties to have an open dialogue about the lengthy and complicated history. Smith welcomed Glover's participation. "My response to him is, 'Give me 15 minutes of your time. Let me show you our side of the story,' " he said. "And, I think he will agree with us that it is a complicated issue and the courts should decide."

Despite the criticism that some still heap on the tribe, it won a legislative victory this week when a provision designed to deny housing benefits to Cherokees until the tribe recognizes freedmen descendants as citizens was altered. The latest version of the bill allows the tribe to receive those benefits as long as a tribal court order on the matter remains in place as the case continues. "The language in the bill is a sign that Congress recognizes the sovereignty and authority of tribal courts to settle internal disputes, which should be considered a victory for not only the Cherokee Nation but all tribes," Smith said.

How to Integrate Weight Training Properly into Your Golf Exercise Program



Are you too confused about weight training for golf?
There are many opinions in the golf world on whether weight training is beneficial or counter-productive to the golf swing.
On the PGA Tour it is a well-known fact that the majority of professional golfers are implementing golf fitness exercises into their training regimen. The goal of such golf fitness exercises is to improve their play on the golf course.
First and foremost, as a professional strength and conditioning coach on the PGA Tour, I see the benefits of a golf specific exercise program are well documented.
The confusion for most amateur golfers probably centers around what specific training modalities and exercises should they include in their golf fitness programs and what are the professional golfers doing.
I get a lot of questions on how are the professional golfers programs set-up, what specific exercises do they incorporate in their programs, and are the exercises in such programs similar to those found in local health clubs. A lot of people ask me if they should include actual dumbbell and barbell exercises into their golf exercise program.
The goal of this article is to provide you information on what the components, modalities, and exercises that compromise a good golf fitness program.
I will also provide you with a breakdown and sequence of a good golf fitness program.
First and foremost, I need to define a few terms to help you create an understanding of the basic goals of a golf fitness program. The main goal of a golf fitness program should be to improve your golf game through the development of your physical body. In order for you to meet this goal, the golf exercises within your program must develop the body relative to the golf swing.
At this point, I must explain a few things about the biomechanics of the golf swing. The golf swing is a total body athletic activity. Meaning the entire body is utilized to swing the golf club. Just as in baseball, you do not throw with only you're your, but rather your entire body. The same is true of the golf swing; you swing the golf club with your entire body. This in the world of strength and conditioning is defined as an "integrated total body athletic action".
The golf swing is easily defined as an athletic action incorporating the entire body to execute. Knowing this point, a golf fitness program must incorporate exercises for the entire body. A term we like to call "integration". Integration is the utilization of exercises that incorporate the entire body. For example, the golf swing incorporates a rotational movement of the core (abdominals, lower back, hips, and obliques). An integrated golf specific exercise incorporating all these muscles would be a physio-ball Russian Twist in which all these muscles are working in a rotational pattern.
This is very different than isolating each muscle of the core and training them separately with isolation exercises such as abdominal crunches. The point to be made is; integrate the muscles of the body rather than isolating each muscle in a golf fitness program.
Secondly, the exercises within a golf fitness program must be "cross-specific" to the anatomical positions, movement patterns, and energy requirements of the golf swing. Simply stated this means train your body with exercises that place your body in the position your perform the golf swing, utilize exercises that move your body through the ranges of motion of the golf swing, and develop the needed energy requirements of golf.
For example, a golf swing is performed in a standing "athletic position". Knowing this fact, it would probably be of greater benefit to perform a physio-ball squat rather than a seated leg extension for the golf swing, why? Because the physio-ball squat places your body in a position similar to a position in which the golf swing is executed. A leg extension isolates the quadriceps in a seated position, which does not train the body in an integrated movement pattern, nor in a position similar to the golf swing.
Cross-specific training results in a "transfer of training effect" onto to golf swing. This simply means the exercises you are performing directly affect your golf swing in a positive manner. One goal of a golf fitness program is to get the greatest amount of benefit from each of your exercises.
If you keep these two principles integration and cross-specific in mind when developing your golf fitness program. The choices made in the selection of exercises will undoubtedly be better for your golf swing.
Once these basic principles are understood you may begin the process of developing a golf fitness program. A golf fitness program consists of a series of modules. The modules are essentially different pieces of the program geared towards developing a specific improvement within the body. As a whole, the separate modules together comprise a golf fitness program. For example, flexibility training is one module that is contained within a golf fitness program. The goal of the flexibility module is to develop the flexibility parameters within the body required of the golf swing. Listed below in sequential order with a brief definition are the modules that comprise a comprehensive golf fitness program.
1. Flexibility Training: exercises to develop flexibility within the body required of the golf swing.
2. Balance Training: modalities geared toward improving your balance capacities in relation to the golf swing.
3. Joint Integrity Training: Exercises to develop strength and endurance in the joints of the body. Injury prevention based exercises for the shoulders, hips, and knees.
4. Core Training: Exercises to develop the required stabilization, strength, and endurance in the core region of the body for the golf swing. Utilizes a variety of modalities and equipment such as physio-balls, medicine balls, tubing, and dumbbells.
5. Total Body Training: Integrated total body strength, endurance, and power training exercises. Geared towards developing the needed strength, endurance, and power within the body in a cross-specific manner relative to the golf swing.
The most important principle to remember relative to the modules comprising a golf fitness program are the goals of each module and the order.
Training order is of the greatest importance with a golf fitness program.
Often times the golfer will attempt to develop power within their muscles before achieving the proper levels of flexibility that the demanding golf swing requires.
If you train this way, you will most likely develop power in the body, but you will likely not be able to use it effectively.
For example, if you develop greater amounts of power in the core region of the body, but don't have the flexibility to execute a full shoulder turn. The ability of your body to utilize your increased power will be less than optimal. I can't emphasize to you enough, keep the training order consistent as I outlined above.
Finally, the number of exercise choices you have in terms of flexibility, balance, joint integrity, core training, and total body exercises for the golf swing are too many to count.
There is also many types of equipment you can use for each component of your golf exercise program.
You can use stretch cords, tubing, medicine balls, dumbbells, and all other types of equipment within a golf fitness program. The points to keep in mind when choosing the actual exercises for your program are: 1) Do the exercises train the body in the anatomical positions of the golf swing? 2) Do the exercises take the body through the ranges of motion entailed within the golf swing? And 3) Do the exercises develop the required energy requirements of the golf swing?
If you use these questions in the decision making process of exercise selection, the final program you develop will most certainly be beneficial to your golf swing.

My mind has been whirling lately ( I mean, when is it not? LOL) on a lot of different subjects and I've been reading a lot about women and finances. There was a very interesting article in a recent magazine ( yes, LOL, given to me by my friend at work. By all accounts, I can't be angry at her. Initially, I don't like being in denial or acting as if 'nothing' is wrong about things because that's not how I operate. I will however, bring up the topic of that GC and ask her if there was anything else she wanted instead, for her birthday present. I thought it was very odd how she didn't bring up the topic, and we went about our day as IF nothing was wrong last week. But I was not, and am not, comfortable about that, seeing as how we HAVE talked about a lot, and she really is not someone 'in passing' that I'd care to dismiss entirely from my life. However, since we haven't seem to have any past problems talking about our lives, our issues, and everything else, I don't see the harm in at least trying to talk to her and express my honesty that I was hurt. I don't like unresolved conflicts, especially AT work, where I see her everyday, and I'm afraid that if I let things go unspoken, it will fester and I may be the one to blow up, which isn't going to solve anything, regardless of what her issues are).


While I don't excuse her rudeness or my own hurt feelings, there needs to be some closure here regarding the topic. I'll address that tomorrow when I go to work and I see her. She spoke to me 'normally' the way she would the day after the whole GC incident so I'm assuming that she isn't SO angry or insulted that she won't be up to not talking about things in general. My idea is that I won't confront her directly in a self-centered way and say, " You know you hurt my feelings" because I don't want it to be ABOUT me. I'll most likely eat with her and then say something like, " You know, I noticed that you were unhappy about the gift I gave you. Is there something else you'd like?" and then take it from there. I figured the best way to handle problems or issues with another person is to include her or him in the conversation rather than make it a 'ME' problem which is what I always did in the past.


One of the big things we had talked about ( and this is actually something I've talked about with countless women, especially women in the adult business) was finances and women. In one of the articles I was reading, this seems to still be a large issue for many women, even the most modern, liberated ones ( or the ones who like to think they are). While women still earn less than the average man ( though the wage gap in many areas is closing) this should be a sign that women SHOULD SAVE MORE and INVEST MORE of what they have left over from their earnings. It's hard enough in some ways to make a living as a single woman when you don't have the assistance of a husband, boyfriend, or parents. Yet, it continues to puzzle me in many ways as to why women I know who are otherwise smart and saavy in their careers or workplaces continue to fail to face their finances. Is it that some women are STILL WAITING for a man to rescue them, either through marriage or partnership? Is it that their earnings are too meager or not enough to have anything to save after the bills are paid? ( Hey, it sucks to see bills. I have a stack of them right here!!)

My friend at work for example makes good money at the office and she's almost 50 years old. Yet, she has very little saved up. Past experiences tell me that because of self-esteem issues, she has always paid the bills for MEN. This was something we seriously talked about, and I told her that she should let herself come FIRST for once...not the worthless men who live off her. It's one thing to help out someone in need or a man who has lost his job...well, as a woman, such as with my ex husband, I couldn't just sit there and let the bills go unpaid, and I sure as hell wouldn't DUMP anyone UNLESS it became clear they were not bothering to find work or started getting too comfortable with my earnings. So is there an element in some women that we don't DESERVE to put ourselves first, therefore, deciding to deny the fact that one day we're going to need something to live on if we're not going to be homeless bag ladies?


Even a married woman who does not work should worry about her finances. I would have no sense of self-worth or pride if I let my husband take care of everything but I was UNAWARE of where we were financially or didn't oversee some part of the financial elements in a marriage.


Women and single mothers in particular are the ones who feel the brunt of poverty more than any other group, and it is especially true for African American and Latino women. It is said in fact that African American women only earn on average 30 cents to every dollar a white male earns. A person might become disabled, get injured, or unemployed. Things happen in life. Yet these are NOT the women that I encounter who have these things happen to them for the most part. Most interesting of all was the resistance and the reluctance I encountered from women in my own industry at one time who were making enough money where if they did invest it, they could have retired nicely by my age, or, they could have had a house. Yet, very, very few of them ever saved a dollar. NOT paying your taxes, NOT having good credit...these are things few of them ever thought about. And folks, you don't want to jeopardize that relationship with Uncle Sam...yet so many women I know have shitty credit, are unable to secure loans, or have not given much thought to retirement funds, or even understand the workings of finance, such as the stock market. The stock market, by the way, as bad as it has been, can be an extremely valuable way to make money. You don't have to be afraid of it or afraid of looking in your checkbook, although that can be scary in itself, like going to the mailbox for those endless bills LOL.


Any thoughts, especially from the many women friends here? If you're a working woman, or even if you are a married homemaker, do you have your finances in order? Do you own property, invest, pay your taxes, make sure you don't default on loans and credit card payments? Are you waiting in your heart for a guy to take over? Hell, I know I'd be a hypocrite to say that it sure would be nice to have a guy assisting me here. Although if I was ever in a dire situation I could go to my parents for help, for some people that may not be an option, and you should NEVER rely on inheritances of any sort to bail you out if you've gotten yourself into a jam!.
