Keeping in mind that Webb is our prohibitive favorite, we can take a look at the relievers and see if any merit further discussion. We can eliminate Wilson and his awful ratios, and while the two middle relievers -- Kuo and Marmol -- have done excellent jobs, they've done so for first place teams and nothing screams "special" about their seasons. Fuentes has done a stellar job for a bad Rockies team, but giving the Cy Young to someone with a single win and less than 30 saves doesn't pass the red-face test. As for Valverde, he has been instrumental to an Astros team that just won't go away. However, those ratios aren't good enough to warrant consideration. That just leaves Lidge, who has been incredible this year and big part of the Phillies' success. While I doubt it can be argued successfully that he is a better candidate than Webb, he likely has merited a top five spot in my voting, not to mention ZERO blown saves this year.

For the starters, let's eliminate the two Cubs -- Dempster and Zambrano -- as neither is leading the league in wins despite playing for the best team in the NL which is sad really. Next goes Haren because we can't even argue that he's the best starter on his own team. Next goes Billingsley because he plays for a better team than Volquez, but still doesn't have as good numbers. Hamels also walks the plank because even with the best bullpen in the NL, he's only mustered 14 wins, and in many respects, the "I've Learned My Lesson" version of Brett Myers has been the Phillies best starter (but his horrible start keeps him off this list). Sheets is out because his team scores runs and his bullpen prevents them, but he still has only 13 wins. Finally, Nolasco and Santana leave hand-in-hand. Even though they've been hard luck pitchers(a bunch of blown victories by bullpens), they're still too many wins away from Webb,

This leaves Cook, Lincecum, Oswalt, Sabathia, Volquez and Webb. Oswalt overcame an abysmal start this year to be one of the most consistent post-All Star Break pitchers in the NL. Cook and Volquez have awful WHIPs for Cy Young contenders, but both played very well for awful teams, but Volquez gets the nod over Cook because of the strikeouts (and yes, I'm penalizing Cook for lack of strikeouts). Sabathia has mixed stats from playing in the AL and NL this year, but has just eaten the NL up. Webb was phenomenal to start the season but sputtered late as he allowed 17 runs in a 3 game stretch where they were over taken by the Dodgers in the NL west. But at least Webb plays for a team with talent, as opposed to Lincecum, who toiled for a team many thought would be the worst in the NL (surprise, they could finish second in the NL West). Lincecum bests Webb in all sorts of categories like opponents BA (.220 to Webb's .241). And the fact that he has had 5 games which were blown by the Giants bullpen, only once has Webb lost a game in which he was winning when he left. Being able to squeeze 17 wins out of the Giants team, what really stands out is his ERA. It is almost 44% better than the entire Giants rotation's and he had a gaudy K/9 above 10.5. And to top it all off, the Giants have scored the fewest runs in the majors this season meaning horrific run support for Lincecum.

Erick Aybar's 12th-inning single off Javier Lopez gave the Angels a 5-4 victory and extended the American League Division Series to a fourth game. The Angels' victory ended an 11-game postseason losing streak to the Red Sox, and also put an end to more than five hours of baseball at Fenway Park.
Aybar's single plated Mike Napoli, who hit two home runs earlier in the game and led off the inning with a single. Napoli moved to second on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Howie Kendrick.
Before Lopez entered the game in the 12th, Red Sox relievers Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima, Justin Masterson and Jonathan Papelbon worked six scoreless innings after taking over for ineffective starter Josh Beckett, who had the worst postseason outing of his career. But Angels relievers outdid the Boston bullpen, putting in 7.2 innings of scoreless work after Joe Saunders left the game in the fifth. Jered Weaver, known as a starter, pitched the 11th and the 12th to earn the win.
The Red Sox had some good chances to win the game. They left the bases loaded off Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez in the 10th inning, when Jed Lowrie lined out to right field. In the bottom of the 11th, Dustin Pedroia hit a scorching line drive right at third baseman Chone Figgins, who threw to strand Coco Crisp at second.
Papelbon got out of a two-on, one-out situation in the top of the 11th. After striking out Garret Anderson, Papelbon walked Mark Teixeira and allowed a single up the middle by Vladimir Guerrero. But Torii Hunter flew out weakly to right field and Gary Matthews Jr. then became Papelbon's third strikeout victim of the night.
Rodriguez, who avoided a third straight postseason walkoff loss to the Red Sox, started the 10th inning by striking out the slumping Pedroia, who remains without a hit in the series. He then walked David Ortiz and gave up a solid single to Kevin Youkilis. After striking out Jason Bay, Rodriguez walked Mike Lowell, ball four coming on a very close pitch that apparently just missed the outside corner. Lowell came out of the game for pinch runner Alex Cora. Lowrie got ahead of the count with the bases loaded and made solid contact, but the ball went right to Matthews.
Papelbon entered the game and blew away the Angels in the top of the 10th, retiring the side in order and preserving a 4-4 tie in Game 3 of the ALDS. Papelbon, throwing in the high 90s, ended the inning by striking out Chone Figgins on a called strike three.
Scot Shields retired the Sox 1-2-3 in the ninth inning for the second consecutive inning, striking out pinch hitter J.D. Drew (subbing for Jason Varitek) for his third strikeout, then getting Crisp and Jacoby Ellsbury to fly out. Shields has retired all seven batters he's faced since entering the game in the seventh inning.
Hunter led off the Angels' half of the ninth inning with a hit, but he was easily thrown out by left fielder Jason Bay trying to stretch the single into a double. Given a reprieve, Masterson retired pinch hitter Kendry Morales and Napoli to end the inning with the score tied in Game 3 of the ALDS.
In the eighth, Masterson struck out Vladimir Guerrero with the go-ahead run on first base and two outs.
Masterson had come on after Okajima had given up a two-out single to Teixeira.
The score has been tied at 4-4 since the bottom of the fifth inning, when Kevin Youkilis' two-out double to center scored Ellsbury, who had led off with a double.
Mike Napoli had hit his second home run of the night with one out in the fifth, giving the Angels a 4-3 lead. In the third inning, he had tied the game with a two-run homer on a 3-and-2 pitch with two out. Both home runs were hit into the Monster Seats in left field. They were the first two hits of Napoli's career against Beckett.
With the Red Sox leading 3-1, Guerrero had opened the third with a double. Beckett retired Hunter (strikeout) and Juan Rivera (pop out) before Napoli's homer.
In the bottom of the second, the Red Sox had been given three gift runs when Hunter, second baseman Kendrick and shortstop Aybar called each other off and let Ellsbury's catchable pop to short center field drop among them, clearing the bases.
With two outs, the Sox had loaded the bases when Angels starter Joe Saunders sandwiched walks to Jed Lowrie and Crisp around a single by Varitek.
The Elias Sports Bureau reports it was the first three-run single in Major League Baseball postseason history.
The Angels broke on top early against Beckett, scoring a run on a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Rivera.
Figgins hit Beckett's first pitch of the game on one hop into the seats near the right-field foul pole for a ground-rule double. It looked as if he might stay there, however, as Beckett struck out both Anderson and Teixeira.
He pitched carefully to Guerrero and walked him, however, and then gave up an infield single to Hunter -- it was a slow grounder to the right side for which Youkilis ranged far to his right but couldn't snare; Dustin Pedroia tracked it down on the edge of the outfield grass, but had no play at first -- that loaded the bases. Rivera then walked on five pitches, forcing in the game's first run.
Beckett escaped further damage by retiring Napoli on a grounder to short.
The Angels also put two men on in the second; Beckett got out it by retiring the hot-hitting Teixeira on a grounder to third.
In the fourth, another messed-up infield grounder to the right side with two out -- this one coming when Beckett failed to get close enough to tag the bag after taking a throw from Youkilis on a ground ball by Teixeira -- gave the Angels a first-and-second, two-out chance. Guerrero then walked on four pitches, loading the bases. But Beckett retired Hunter on a grounder to second to end the threat.
Through four innings, the Angels stranded eight runners. Beckett -- nowhere near his normal dominating postseason self -- allowed seven hits and four walks in those four innings. His pitch count was 92.

Baseball and creativity

One way to spur your creativity is to try and link dissimilar topics. So, since we are in the midst of the baseball playoffs (Go White Sox!), I thought, whats better than writing about something that links baseball and creativity. So I got to thinking

No doubt there are times in baseball where players use creativity in getting an out or in hitting and running. Yet, it dawned on me that there is one place where very little creativity is used and yet its an area where it could have huge returns.

The line-up.

Yes, there is precious little creativity used in placing the nine men at various slots in the lineup.

“Hows that, Plish?”

If strictly talking numbers, say a team only had nine players that were bonafide starters counting the DH (Im talking the American League here). That means there are 9! (nine factorial) ways that lineup can be put together. Thats 362,880 different ways of putting together a lineup! Now, say the team has 12 bonafide starters from which to pick from, that number balloons to 79,833,600 combinations! If there are 14 then the number goes to 726,485,760!! Just for fun, if all 25 players (this means including pitchers) could be picked from to make the starting lineup, the number of possible permutations is: 741,354,768,000!

Now going back to the more realistic lineups. How many different lineups would you say most managers use during the course of a season? I dont know, but I would venture to guess that at the most teams use maybe 40 lineups during the course of a season – and thats with injuries. (Actually, even if they used different lineups for every game that would be a whole 0.45% of the permutations used in the best case scenario!)

I know, I know. Technically, according to baseball traditions, certain guys bat lead off because theyre fast, and other guys bat fourth because theyre sluggers, and the not so great guys bat near the end, and others bat at a certain place because they freak out if they dont.

But still. There are somewhere between 362,880 and 726,485,760 different combinations and baseball managers dont even scratch the surface with the various permutations. After all, how do they know for sure that some other permutation might not be magnitudes better? The only time a lineup really matters is in the first inning, and maybe the second. After that the “leadoff” guy may not lead-off for the rest of the game, and the clean-up guy (the guy batting fourth) may never come up with men on base.

So what do you think? How well do you stack up compared to Baseball managers and are they really lacking in creativity with regards to lineups.

In Spring 1968 Mr. Clean was a Changed Man and was reformulated to include pine aroma and better cleaning in the bucket. In October 1970 Lemon Refreshed Mr. Clean premiered. In the summer of 1974 Two Fisted Mr. Clean was introduced, who was great at cleaning on one hand and on the other hand he leaves whats shiny gleaming. (This commercial brought back the use of the original Mr. Clean jingle). In March 2007, Mr. Clean launched an online competition with YouTube that gave consumers the opportunity to create a commercial advertising the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser ( http://www.mrcleanscenes.com ). Entrants were asked to use up to 60 seconds of time for their advertisement. In 1996 Mr. Clean appeared in How Times Have Changed, once again using the original Mr. Clean jingle and the new Ultra power in it. In July 1985 a new Mr. Clean was introduced with better full-strength cleaning to clean down to the shine like never before. In January 1983 Mr. Clean offered Lemon Bright improved no-wax formula. In March 1985 Mr. Clean celebrated his 24th anniversary as The Man Behind the Shine with donation of all Mr. Clean television commercials to the UCLA Film Television and Radio Archives. In spring 1966 Mr. Clean offered clean and shine, in the Mr. Clean leaves a sheen where you clean campaign. He grew whiskers for brute strength, had a black eye to show floor and testified in court against dirt. In the spring of 1966 Mr. Clean played grime fighter, who knocked out dirt with one hand and left the shine with the other. In the winter of 1963 Mr. Clean played a police officer who really arrested dirt problems.
Mr. Clean also makes a melamine foam cleaner under the name-brand of Magic Eraser. Mr. Clean made its debut on the market in 1958. Hal Mason, the head animator at Cascade Pictures in Hollywood, modified the pre-existing artwork in print advertising to be more readily used for the television commercials written, produced and directed by Thomas Scott Cadden. (Cadden also wrote the words and music for the original Mr. Clean jingle see below.) The mascots then begin to brutally attack Homer and Mr. Cleanser, identical to Mr. Clean right down to having the correct skin colour (as opposed to the usual yellow skin of characters in the series), angrily informs Homer in a German accent I. must. destroy you!. Within the first six months of the introduction, Mr. Clean became the best-selling household cleaner on the market. In the summer of 1963 Mr. Clean became the first liquid household cleaner in a plastic bottle.
Mr. Clean is a brand name fully owned by Procter : Gamble and created in Puerto Rico.
Mr. Cleans appearance with his tight muscle shirt, ear piercing, stylishly handsome looks, fastidious habits, and helpful but deferential persona in television commercials, has made Mr. Clean into something of a gay icon. Mr. Cleans theme song, or jingle, has been around since the products introduction, initially sung as a popular-music style duet between a man ( Don Cherry ) and a woman (Betty Bryan). Thomas Scott Cadden (1923-2007) wrote the jingle at his home in Skokie, Illinois in the spring of 1957 while working for Tatham-Laird : Kudner Advertising Agency.

make mrproper is a command in the Linux kernel build system, used to clean up all files from past builds and restore the build directory to its original clean state. The reason make mrproper is used instead of make mrclean is because Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux, was familiar with the name Mr. Proper as this is the brand widely known in Europe. Robin Freedman hasnt bought a cleaning product in five years. It doesnt mean her house is dirty. The Seattle mother makes her own homemade cleansers, using traditional combos as vinegar and water to clean her floors and bathroom. The reason: Freedman worries about the impact of chemicals in conventional products on her familys health and the environment. In Washington State, some hospitals and schools now clean only with non-chemical based products. In Massachusetts, proposed legislation would require those same non-toxic methods be mandatory for cleaning daycares, schools and other public buildings.
Im trying to be a conscientious parent and a conscientious consumer. A movement is afoot among consumers such as Ms. Freedman to change how people clean, what kinds of products they use and how transparent manufacturers should be about what is inside their products. Instead of worrying about germs and dirt, these consumers are concerned about the chemicals sprayed to rid their homes of germs and dirt.

In addition to its regular 'paying' guests, the hotel is reported to play host to a number of 'ghastly' visitors. The most notable is F.O. Stanley himself who is most often seen in the lobby and the Billiard Room, which was his favorite room when he was still alive. On one such occasion, he was said to have appeared during a tour groups visit to the Billiard Room, materializing behind a member of the tour. Bartenders at the old hotel also report having seen F.O. stroll through the bar, disappearing when they try to cut him off at the kitchen.

Flora Stanley purportedly haunts the hotel as well, continuing to entertain guests with her 'beyond the dead' piano playing in the Music room. Employees and guests have reported hearing music coming from the room, and when they take a peek into the room they can see the piano keys moving. However, as soon as someone walks across the threshold to investigate further, the music stops.

Cleaning crews report having heard many strange noises coming from room 418, as well as seeing impressions on the bed when the room has been empty. Guests often report they hear children playing in the hallway at night. One couple reportedly checked out of the hotel very early in the morning, complaining that the children in the hallway kept them up all night. However, there were no children booked in the hotel at the time.

In 2002, a guest reportedly recorded a ghostly man wearing a cowboy hat and a mustache staring out of the window of room 408. The image stood in the window for a few minutes then fades to the left of the window. Upon questioning the front desk about the odd image, the employee explained that nobody was checked into that room that evening and nobody could have stood in that window since it was above the bathroom sink and the "fading" direction would have taken the person through the wall.

In 2006, a guest attending her sister's wedding (held in the Music Room) had an unearthly and unexplained encounter. During the wedding reception, she went upstairs to the Bride and Groom's suite and -- as a joke -- wrote "RED RUM" on the bathroom mirror in lipstick. Returning downstairs, walking down the grand staircase leading to the lobby, she felt a distinct shove on her lower back, lost her footing, and fell eight steps landing face down on the wood floor below. After being helped to her feet, she looked behind her to see who did it, and no one was there.

The neoclassical hotel was the inspiration for the fictional Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's novel The Shining. While he and his wife were staying at the Stanley, King conceived the basic idea for the novel. The Stanley Hotel shows the uncut R-rated version of Kubrick's The Shining on a continuous loop on Channel 42 on guest room televisions.

When it is all said and done, there will be plenty of blame to go around. Members of both parties will share responsibility for the failure of this bailout. Furthermore, the entire nature of the bailout is likely the biggest culprit. In other words, this was a bad bill, hastily done, and more than anything else, that's why it failed. Yet, in my opinion, the biggest villain without it even being close is Nancy Pelosi. Her behavior regarding this bill is an epitome of everything that is wrong in D.C. She played a duplicitous, cynical and hypocritical game full of political calculation and never once did she put the fate of the country above her own political power. That said here is how things broke down.

I was struck from the beginning at the behavior of the Democrats. While they have blamed President Bush for everything including this crisis, it was amazing how much deference they gave to the plan. Despite their bluster, from the beginning, they went along with most of its premise. They were always in favor with the basic philosophy of the bailout. It's like they blamed Bush for the crisis and then wanted to give him the authority to fix it. All their changes were either ridiculous, non sensical, or cosmetic. Trying to fund ACORN through the bailout was ridiculous. Attempting to put union reps on the board of failed companies was non sensical, and limiting CEO pay was cosmetic. That's about all they offered to the process.

Republicans, on the other hand, were against the plan on wholesale philosophical reasons from the beginning. They didn't believe that bailing out bad investments was the right way to fix things.

As such, by midweek the message from Capitol Hill was a very confused one. Depending on who you listened to a deal was imminent, dead on arrival, or a long way away. As such, John McCain made a bold move on Wednesday. He suspended his campaign and planned on returning to D.C. to help get a deal done. This appears to have frightened the Democratic caucus which was totally freaked out that he could get any credit for moving the process. This appears to have set the stage for a hastily made "deal" at about noon the next day. McCain hadn't arrived yet, and he was about to meet with the President in a bi partisan meeting hours later.

This deal didn't pass my sniff test from the beginning. Speaking for the Republicans was one
Robert Bennett of Utah. I am political astute enough to know that 1) I've never heard of him and 2)that means he can't be all that significant. If he was in the Republican leadership, I would have at least have known his name before he stood up to represent the Republicans in this deal. Hours later my suspicions were corrollated as one leader after another spoke out against the deal, Richard Shelby, John Boehner, and Mike Pence to name three.

Then, came the fateful meeting at the White House later in the day. Only those in the room know what happened. Here is what we do know, 1) it was contentious and confrontation, 2)Republicans who weren't included in prior discussions spoke out vigorously against the agreement and 3) and in many ways most important, Barack Obama was the de facto leader of the Democrats in the meeting. After this meeting, it was clear there was no deal. Yet, anyone that could read between the lines knew that there wasn't really a deal to begin with.

Now, the Democrats who failed to strike a deal prior to McCain's arrival began to pivot. They began to blame McCain for derailing a deal that was never really there. McCain, for his part, made a series of missteps that will likely cost him the Presidency. First, his campaign decided to get involved in partisan fingerpointing. His campaign put out a statement bemoaning the partisan nature of the process. He would have been much better served putting out a statement explaining that the legislative process is messy, lot's of heated things are said in the middle of battle, but that he was committed to seeing the process through and that he would spend the rest of the weekend on Capitol Hill making sure this deal was done.

Then, he was spooked by the Democrat's accusations and he stopped showing up on Capitol Hill. Instead, he made a series of phone calls from his office. Whatever he did to move the process along, no one will know it because he did at arm's length. Finally, at the debate, rather than jumping on the Republican's pro free market plan, he muddled through an answer about bi partisanship. Rather than hanging the bailout around Obama and the Democrats, he jumped aboard a bad policy full of bad politics.

Meanwhile, back on Capitol Hill, Democrat and Republican negotiators were busy NEGOTIATING. Meanwhile, Speaker Pelosi was busy poisoning the waters. Over the weekend, she accused the House Republicans of being unpatriotic for not showing up to negotiations earlier in the week. Of course, this was the height of hypocrisy and duplicitousness. The reason they didn't show up was because they weren't invited by Pelosi herself. Meanwhile, her caucas was engaged in heavy handed tactics. At one meeting, scheduled to be two Republicans and two Democrats along with Treasury and Bernanke, the Democrats sent in an army of nine to negotiate with only two Republicans.

By just after midnight, on Sunday morning, a deal had been struck, but this was tenuous at best. The philosophy of the bailout was still in place. Most of the rank and file Republicans were totally opposed to such a structure. Meanwhile, there was nothing in the deal for Main Street which would be a difficult sell for Democrat rank and file. Now it was Minority leader Boehner's turn to show a lack of leadership. In presenting this deal, he once referred to it as a "stinker", and to say that he tepidly supported it would be a massive understatement. With that "ringing" endorsement, the rank and file needed no more reason to oppose. Meanwhile, Mike Pence renewed his objection and made this statesmanlike statement.

Back in the 50s and 60s the National League was known for having exciting young players and the American League was known, rightfully so, as the old white guy league.  Oh, how the times have changed.  The NLs inferiority has never been more glaring than this year.  In 2008 only threecount them, threeout of the 16 NL teams had winning records during inter-league play.  Even the disgraceful Seattle Mariners managed to break even versus Senior Circuit foes.  I have officially started referring to the National League as AAAA.  Also, can we start calling the NLCS the Battle to be Bridesmaid?  If it wasnt for the 06 Tigers inexplicably becoming the Bad News Bears during the Fall Classic, you would have to go back to 2003 for the last time an NL team won a World Series GAME.  This year, there have been some NLers who have had huge years (Chipper Jones, Albert Pujols, Tim Lincecum), while numbers have been down in the AL.  This may lead some to believe that the NL is actually superior.  However, I believe that the competition is so bad in the NL that the few real stars of the league simply distance themselves from the rest of the pack, while the competition in the AL is so stiff that no one has been able to distinguish themselves.  In this piece I will support my argument by citing a number of specific players and reasons why the NL is no longer in the same class as their AL counterparts.
Manny Ramirez
Since changing leagues at the trade deadline, Man-Ram has put together the best 50-game stretch of his illustrious 16-year career.  Think about that, a Hall of Famer who has put up some of the most eye-popping offensive numbers of all time is hotter than ever at the age of 36.  Granted, hes got new found energy after basically being on cruise control for his last three years in Boston, but 17 bombs in 50 games is just plain ridiculous.  At that pace he would be up around 60 over an entire season and we all know that shouldnt be possible without the aid of the cream and the clear, or some good old fashioned beef roids.  Oh yeah, did I mention hes batting a robust .398 with an OBP of .491?  Manny has seen more mediocre fastballs in two months in the NL than he did in his 7-plus seasons with the Red Sox, and he hasnt missed any of them.

Jeff Suppan 10-10 gave up five first inning runs to the Reds and gave up two homers in the 11-2 drubbing by the Reds. Manny Parra relieved Suppan and gave up four more homers. Ramon Ramirez 1-0 making only his third major league start for the Reds pitched six innings and allowed two runs and seven hits. The Brewers could only manage ten singles off Reds pitching and while the Brewers had no extra base hits the Reds had seven homers the only extra base hits for the Reds in the game.

Reds rookies Jay Bruce and Joey Votto both homered twice and finished the game with 21 homers each. The Reds may be out of the race this season but they have laid the groundwork for a better team in 2008. Rookies Bruce, Votto and Chris Dickerson have emerged as players ready to come back and build on their 2008 season. Dickerson has 6 homers and 15 RBI's in 102 at bats after making his major league debut on August 12th. Projected over a 500 at bat season he would have approximately 30 homers and 75 RBI's plus his 17 extra base hits projects to 85 which is 31 more than the 2008 Reds leader Edwin Encarnacion who has 54 extra base hits at the present time.

The starting pitching should be better if Edinson Volquez 16-6 and Bronson Arroyo 15-10 pitch this well in 2009. Aaron Harang is not likely to have another 5-16 season. Johnny Cueto 8-13 has pitched more consistently in August and September. Ramon Ramirez 1-0 is making a bid for a starting spot in the 2009 starting rotation. Homer Bailey 0-6 has not pitched well but time is on his side at the age of 22 and he especially needs to work on his control after issuing 17 walks in 36 innings.

This afternoon C.C. Sabathia 15-9 will face Johnny Cueto 8-13 in another crucial game for the Brewers.

There's a combination of factors that are causing some people "in the know" to predict that at least on major U.S. newspaper will close this year (or at least go online only).

Money is in short supply because classified ads have moved to the internet with many of the regular advertisers following. The big regular advertisers that stuck with newspapers are ailing this year (Real Estate and Cars). To top it off, the monopoly that controls the cost of newsprint have raised the price dramatically this year (nearly 75%).

It's a tough time to bleed ink. In Milwaukee, the Journal has had two rounds of buy-outs/staff cuts this year. The most recent one is supposed to cut the staff by ten percent. The Journal's attempt at a hip paper just shut its doors with a last issue that felt like a wake.

While the death of the print newspaper is sure to help save some trees, it also has some depressingly huge drawbacks.

Probably the worst is that as far as news goes, the good print newspapers were the best source for investigative reporting and in depth coverage of a story. While the broadcast news tends to look at investigative reporting as bringing a camera into a restaurant that might have a few health code violations, print reporters have done things such as exposing a bribery system for liquor licenses (Chicago).

The disappearance (or new internet homes) of the local papers may lead to better reporting on the internet, but there's no guarantee. Plus, for $.50 or so, anyone can have access to the day's news. Not everyone has the internet though (nearly 1/3 of Americans don't, and more than 2/3 don't have broadband).

There are other lesser reasons why it's depressing. In my parents basement, there's still the paper from when man landed on the fucking moon. When P was born, I bought a paper so he could see what was in the news (Ben Sheets pitched a complete game that day). It's just a great way to remember epic events.

Finally, as a recent flap over Boingboing "unpublishing" posts shows, print news is just harder to disappear than information flowing in the internet ether.

I may be just a print newspaper romantic (or a subscriber) but I'll miss them when they're gone.

Today I tabled for the College Republicans in an effort to recruit some of the freshman for campaign work this fall. It has been a while since Ive tabled, but the experience was remarkably similar. I saw some excitement and I was surprised by a few closet Republicans who told me they were glad to see the Republicans on campus. Then there were the special cases. The people (mostly adults) who really want to express their opinions about John McCain to me. Usually with one particular finger or the very helpful advice that I should f-ck off and pull my head out of my ass. Another told me Country First! Country LAST!. I still am not quite sure whether she meant that she wants to put her country last, or that she believes McCain does. I would have to assume the former due to the mountain of evidence contradicting the latter.
I have come to believe that the Democrat Party is the party of anger. I can understand frustration- certainly I felt frustrated after the national embarrassment of the philandering Bill Clinton as our president for eight years. Yet Republicans did not respond by putting bumper stickers on our car marking his last day in office. Republicans generally are not going to walk by and engage a young Democrat in a rude manner. After all, this is not a totalitarian society. Differing viewpoints should be welcomed, particularly on a college campus. While I was initially offended by such a virulent reaction, I look at it now as a positive sign that the Democrats are running scared. They have no unifying ideology, a candidate who is flailing, and a boring Vice Presidential candidate paired up with the latest political sensation. Given that set of circumstances, it is understandable that they would behave like petulant children rather than as passionate, mature adults.

But mostly, I wanted the term "ballpark" in the name. I think it's important to distinguish this facility from the multi-purpose "stadiums" we've had here in the past. I think fans are going to be blown away by the experience of being in a baseball-only facility (or in the case of the U of M's TCF Bank Stadium, a football-only facility). That's something we've never had here in Minnesota. At least not at the major-professional level. Met Stadium in Bloomington was designed for both the Vikings and the Twins. The HHH Metrodome was designed for both of them as well. Plus it hosted the Gophers, Timberwolves, College Basketball Tournaments and hundreds of other events. But Target Field is baseball-specific, even if the name doesn't quite make that clear. I wish they would've made that more distinct.

Who Would Have Thought?..........
That Armando Gallaraga would have the most wins of any Detroit Tigers pitcher and have a 11-4 record an a 3.11 ERA while Justin Verlander is 8-13 and an ERA of 4.77....that Ryan Ludwick on August 14th would have six more homers and 15 more RBI's than Albert Pujols and would also be leading Pujols in slugging with a .608 percentage to .599 by Pujols....that Dustin Pedroia, Ian Kinsler, Jose Lopez and Jose Reyes are on a pace to have 200 hits by the end of the season....that Cliff Lee who was 5-8 and had an ERA of 6.29 last season would be trying for his 17th win on August 15th with a 16-2 record and an ERA of 2.45 in 2008.
That Carlos Quentin who had 5 homers and 31 RBI's while slugging .349 in 2007 would be leading the American League in homers with 32 and having 90 RBI's and slugging .563  with a month and a half left in the season....that Andruw Jones would be listed as No. 295 in homers this season at mlb.com with 3 homers and 14 RBI's in 205 at bats and hitting .161 and slugging .254 which is 235 points lower than his .489 lifetime slugging percentage. With Jones on the DL he may be doing the team a favor because whoever takes his place can do no worse than Jones who is making $14.7 million this season for impersonating a major league baseball player. To make things look worse for Jones the Dodgers traded for Manny Ramirez who has 5 homers and 16 RBI's in only 48 at bats and is slugging .813.
Wild Card Leaders
The four teams that have the lead in the AL wild card are the Red Sox with a 3 game lead over the Twins, a 6 and a half game lead over the Yankees and the Blue Jays who are 9 games back. No other wild card team in the AL has a winning record....In the NL the Brewers are 3 games ahead of the Cardinals, five and a half game  ahead of the Phillies and 7 games ahead of the Marlins. The Dodgers, Astros and Diamondbacks are 7 1/2 games behind the Brewers.
Looking at the Standings
The Cubs, Brewers and Astros are all 8-2 in their last ten games. The Rays and Red Sox are 7-3 in their last ten games while the third place Yankees in the AL East are 3-7 and have slipped to 9 1/2 games behind the Rays.... Cubs and Rays have the best home records with 45-17 record at home....Angels are the only division leader in the majors with a winning record on the road with a 38-21 record. The Phillies, Brewers and Cardinals are the only teams in the majors with a winning record on the road.
