Its only been 5 years since this product was released, but the whole idea Upper Deck was shooting for never really caught on.  Every box of 2003 Upper Deck Classic Portraits contained 1 jersey, autograph or patch, 3 rookies, and 2 Hall of Fame cards.  The real interesting part about this product was that in every box there was 1 collectible bust.  These busts would be of current or retired players.  If you were lucky you could hit an autographed bust of a good player.  After 2003 you never saw this product come back.  Upper Deck did use the title for a few other sets but they did not include a bust.  Those contained autographed 810 photos.  The biggest rookie in the set is probably Brandon Webb.  I think if a company wants to include something like a bust in every box, I would stick with items fans are more familiar with, for example, baseballs, bats, and perhaps even bobbleheads.  I would love to see a product that features a bobblehead per box.  I wonder where Upper Deck even came up with the idea for a bust.  I mean there arent any busts of players in the HOF.   Baseball Hall of Famers have plaques.

Playoff Sunday at the Fall Jam Fest was eventful and full of comeback victories. There were some upsets, some spectacular performances, and eventually some champions crowned. While it certainly did not draw big name coaches like July events do—how could it?—there were college coaches in attendance both today and yesterday. Schools such as Felician, Delaware Valley, Assumption, St. Michael’s, Widener, and Rutgers- Camden all had coaches out and about. In addition, over the two days there were scouts from a number of services including Tom Konchalski of the HSBI Report, ESPN, and NJHoops.com. All said, it was a great event that gave a lot of athletes exposure. A number of ballers took advantage of the opportunity and shined today. Here is a list of some of those talented players:

Five of these gifted players really put on a show. Lorenzo Freeman was dominant for Edison Academy Blue, helping to lead the squad to the Open Silver Bracket title. The 6’8 big man displayed athleticism and fantastic post player. Freeman had a number of monster dunks, at least two of which were right on top of defenders. Travis Farrell knocked down eight threes as his team was knocked out the Open Silver Bracket in the first round. Despite the loss, Farrell demonstrated an uncanny ability to knock down treys. Every time he shot the rock, you just expected it to go in. Kyrie Irving has been one of the best players in America this summer, regardless of class or position. Irving probably had the best showing in the event out of everyone. The 6’3 point guard was unstoppable, scoring and dishing the ball out at will. Irving dropped 27 and 25 in the Open Gold Bracket semifinals and finals respectively. Like Farrell, Gansy Cruz also played in just one game on Sunday, but he made the most of it. Although his squad was bounced in the first round of U-17 Gold Bracket play, the short and stocky point guard put on a show. Cruz was nearly impossible to contain, getting to the rack with ease en route to finishing the game with 20 points. You probably haven’t heard of the other major big-time performer from Sunday, but you will want to watch out for Rob Gagliardi in the future. The senior shooting guard had 29 points in the in the Open Gold Bracket quarterfinals . . . in the first half, that is. That’s right, Gagliardi had 29 points in a 16-minute half. He finished the game with 31 points, as he was on the bench for most of the second half in a blowout win.

In the U-17 division, two top-notch squads squared off in the quarterfinals: Team New Jersey ABC and the New England Playaz. The boys from New England were without two of their best players, big men Nate Lubick ’10 and Jordan Williams ’09, both of whom injured their an ankle on Saturday. Austin Carroll ’09, Gansy Cruz ’09, and Nadir Tharpe ’11 were still in action, making the team still quite formidable. In the first half, the teams were neck and neck throughout, with the NE Playaz taking a one-point, 30-29 lead into the break. Markus Kennedy ’10 had 15 points for NJABC in the first 16 minutes of action, teaming with Wayne Newsom ’10 to keep the squad in the game. The Garden State boys raced out of the gate in the second half, quickly grabbing a lead, holding it, and stretching it out even further. Wayne Newsom and Dondre Whitmore ’10 led the charge for NJABC as Markus Kennedy was silent with just one point in the half. Gansy Cruz and Nadir Tharpe refused to give in, keeping the ultra-talented team within striking distance. The guard duo repeatedly got to the hole and got buckets in the paint. Just when it seemed like NJABC was pulling away, Cruz came up with a number of big buckets, but it was too little too late, and NJABC picked up the win. The squad was knocked out in the semifinals after blowing a lat 12-point lead against Team Assault (MD), who would end up with a seven-point win. In the other semifinal affair, the Jersey Shore Warriors knocked off Hoopdreamz Basketball (PA) to advance to the finals. Once there, Jersey Shore took control of the game early and never looked back. Team Assault led 5-0 to start things and the game was knotted up at 12 with 10:20 left in the half. Then, Andrew Nicholas ’11 banged in his third triple of the half to give the Warriors a three-point cushion. From there, it was all about the Warriors. The squad stretched its lead to seven, 25-18, with 3:10 in the half. It was in the second half though, that they really began to run away with it. The team led by 20 points, 50-30, with 10:30 to play, and was in full control of the game. The team, which featured Nicholas, Omar Grier ’10, Jesse Krasna ’10, and Jack O’Neill ’10, led 61-32 with eight minutes remaining, the equivalent of one quarter. There was not much scoring the rest of the way, and the Jersey Shore Warriors coasted to the U-17 Gold Bracket championship by a final score of 66-36. Omar Grier led the way with 17 points, with Andrew Nicholas adding 16, including four three-pointers. For Team Assault, Donte Thomas ’10 was the high scorer with 14 points. Antonio Jennifer ’10 had 10 points in his own right for the runner-up squad.
The Open Gold Bracket championship was one of the final games of the event. The participants, Grassroots Canada and the New Jersey Roadrunners, both had to get past superb teams in the semifinals. Grassroots Canada narrowly edged the Memorial Park Playas, a team that included David Laury ’09, Markens Charles ’09, and Jerry Coriolan ’09, in a game that came down to the wire. Many people probably didn’t expect the New Jersey Roadrunners to win their semifinal game against Playaz Red (NJ), but did just that, in dominant fashion. Kyrie Irving ’10 led the charge for the squad, scoring 19 points in the first half, as his team had a double-digit advantage heading into the intermission. For the Playaz, Aishon White ’10 was really the only one scoring, as Isaiah Epps ’10 was limited to just three points and Fuquan Edwin ’10 had only two. When it was all said and done, the Roadrunners walked away with a 20+ point victory, and Irving had 27 points. Fuquan Edwin used a strong second half to finish with 21 points for the Playaz, and Aishon White ended up with 14. In the championship, it was a tale of two halves. Grassroots Canada jumped out to a 16-3 lead just 4:40 into the affair, and controlled the first 16 minutes almost effortlessly. Although the Roadrunners were able to cut the lead to 19-12, they could not stay close for long. The boys from across the border led 34-17 with 5:40 remaining in the half, and it seemed as if the Open Division Gold Bracket championship game would be just as lopsided as the U-17 one was.

In the financial news, the course of events have been startling. Here is a synopsis: The economic crisis of 2008 has ended the era of bulge bracket investment banking, as Bear Stearns, Merrill Lynch, and Lehman Brothers faced implosion, and Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have become commercialized banks with greater scrutiny from the Federal Reserve. Warren Buffet (considered the saga of Wall Street and the second richest man in the world), probably arguably saved Goldman Sachs by investing about $10 billion dollars of his own money into the stock. Washington Mutual was seized by the FDIC, and is the largest bank to fail in US history. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the nations largest mortgage buyer, were officially backed by about $100 billion dollars of government capital as the mortgage meltdown has intensified. And the insurance giant AIG was also rescued by the Fed with a similar $85 billion dollar package.

And what does all this mean, why is it important, and how did it happen. Banks write mortgages as assets on their accounting books to show they had available liquid money, but as housing prices began to fall and people began to default on their mortgages, the numbers in the books were not equated to what the banks could actually get in the market. This led to a greater scrutiny by people (stockholders) into the accounts of banks and how much they were actually leveraging as credit. The riskier investment banks were hit first, since they leverage large amounts of money without little actual assets. People began to lose confidence in the investment banks actually being able to withstand rising debt and crisis, and Bear Stearns was the first to be affected. And as time has passed, people have lost even further confidence in investment banks. Our economy over the past few years has been advanced by individuals and banks taking large amounts of risk whose consequences are finally coming to fruition.

The credit offered by banks to businesses has dried up quickly after Lehman Brothers imploded. Banks are fearful of the state of the economy, and would rather keep the money as assets to ward off possible default on loans and other risks than loan the money, since their housing assets have fallen too remember. And as money in the form of credit by banks is being dried up, business may be forced to contract to withstand the loss of the available money, which is why individuals would become unemployed. Labor (human capital) is the greatest expense by businesses, and the reason why businesses are forced to lay people off. It is how the Great Depression was mainly caused, by a loss of credit and loans to business because of the bank failures, which led to a soaring high unemployment of 25%. The US will never reach this level of unemployment again though, because of the Federal Reserve and our confidence within the world stage. The current unemployment level is only at 6%.

All this is the reason why the Federal Reserve is demanding a $700 billion dollar bail out to Wall Street to provide hopefully confidence in the market and create liquid capital. The Fed will purchase troubled assets on banks balance sheets with the money. The Fed is mainly afraid liquid capital is diminishing quickly, and wants to solve the problem before it might further exacerbate.

A concern is that the Fed has most likely overvalued the purchase to favor Wall Street instead of the US taxpayer. Since those mortgages are at book value on the accounting sheets instead of market value, the US taxpayer will most likely be paying more for the troubled assets than theyre worth, and wall street will make money.

And all this leads to the main topic and true debate, moral hazard versus market confidence and which is more important of a concern at the present moment. By Washington bailing out Wall Street, the government will be creating a moral hazard in the financial system, where individuals will believe that the government will rescue them when times get tough, and individuals will thus take upon themselves more risk in the future. At the same time, a loss of market confidence creates an unnecessary slump that does not properly reflect the true nature of the economy at the present moment. People stop investing because they fear the worst, and the worst comes because people stop investing a sad spiral of self fulfilling prophesy.

And finally, my opinion (if it was not intertwined through this essay). By the Fed arguing for this giant bailout as a necessary agent of economic success, the bailout is in fact necessary. The confidence of the market at the moment has now been based on the result of this bailout, regardless if the results were as gloomy as the Feds prognosis. If the bailout collapses, the stock market will fall, and banks will retain capital, and liquidity of money will be frozen, because of the fallout of what the Fed said was necessary. Regardless if the bailout will create moral hazard for the future or create more costs to the US taxpayer, the fallout will be much worse because the Fed has emphasized the necessity of this bailout. This is why the treasure secretary is on his knees begging to Nancy Pelosi to make this bailout pass Congress. Thus, this bailout is definitely necessary now because we have emphasized its necessity.

On the positive side, Ihave finally gotten into a research group. Two actually. I will be working with Dr. Raschke and Dr. Zhang in a collaborative project. Cheers to Markus for getting me in, Idefinitely owe him If Ican feel indebted to the rest of my professors, Imight be able to self-consciously study harder for their classes.

Getting a tour of Dr. Zhangapos;s laboratory was quite intimidating. Ifelt compelled to ask questions, but being away from the scene all summer made me nervous about doing this. It is very easy to sound stupid at this level of knowledge. I probably sounded stupid. At any rate, he showed me what I would be doing: Iapos;m going to be making nanoscale platinum electrodes This is done by stretching hot capillaries of glass so thin that they are physically unviewable in the visible wavelength. Richard, someone Ihad become friends with during the TAconference, is going to be teaching me how to do this, and Iwas very relieved to learn he was going to be helping me.

After Iapos;ve made enough electrodes, I will be using them in some type of experiment withDr. Raschke. I think it involves probing individual atoms using the electrodes. Keep in mind when I say "going to be working with...", it probably means I will be typing numbers into a computer, alone.

Now this means Ihave 9 hours of research lab, 9 hours of Quantitative Analysis lab, and 3 hours of Nursing Chemistry lab a week. Plus the normal stuff - yapos;know - classes. How the hell my 11 Chemistry credits turned into 30 hours of in-class/lab work, It know.

Oh shit.

Thatapos;s my first answer to "How am going to deal with all this?" Thereapos;s no half-sane masterplan devised by a failing dictator in his fits of rage that I can use to manage this quarter. But Ithink a planner might work. Ibought a very fancy one the other week, and dammit is this sucker going to be used.

To top it all off, Ihave a lot of prospects this quarter. Itapos;s so hard to choose or focus on a woman, and Iapos;m very indecisive. Iapos;m going to have to wait things out, and hope that one of the many will shine out from the rest. Or I could just goto a bar and have it all blur together. Damn. Itapos;s gonna be one of those quarters...
