The quotes are just as powerful out of context as they are slotted in their correct sequence.
You gotta be able to live with losing, former Minnesota Vikings Coach Bud Grant said. s the hardest thing to get over it. You cant let it eat you up.
Grant said that during in the latest installment of s Game: Missing Rings, which profiles the 1969 Minnesota Vikings. That team won 12 straight games during the season an accomplishment no team had done in the previous 35 years. It led the NFL in points scored, points allowed and was the least penalized.
The Vikings episode appears at 9 p.m. (CST) Thursday on NFL Network.
Only the Vikings records and statistics fail to matter on the NFLs scrap heap of history. The Vikings lost Super Bowl IV to the Kansas City Chiefs 23-7 and are forgotten along with the rest of historys losers. Its a familiar tone with the Vikings, who lost three more Super Bowls over the next seven seasons. The Vikings best team in 1998, which finished 15-1 in the regular season, will appear on a future episode as well.
s Game: Missing Rings features five of the NFLs best teams to never win the Super Bowl. Along with the 1969 and 1998 Vikings, the five-episode series features the 1990 Buffalo Bills and the 1988 Cincinnati Bengals. The first installment, which debuted Sept. 18, showed the 1981 San Diego Chargers.
The s Game series ranks at the top of all sports documentaries, featuring every Super Bowl champion. If its possible, from the first two episodes, the Missing Rings might be better. These losing teams were even more colorful than most of the Super Bowl winners and their deficiencies were more pronounced. By the end of the episode you know the team is going to lose, but you kind of hope it doesnt. You ask the same  questions as the teams fans.
The 1969 Vikings episode begins with the Vikings transition from expansion franchise to NFL superpower. It focuses on the perpetual arguments between first coach Norm Van Brocklin and first (and future) quarterback Fran Tarkenton. Then both left, and Grant took over in 1967. He then brought in Joe Kapp, a Mexican-American, from Canada to play quarterback.
Kapp was all bravado at QB. He and his teammates joked about his throwing style, which Kapp said didnt include using the laces. He threw some passes that looked like ducks but they made it into the hands of the receivers, Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall said.
The episode deals with race issues from the era, which seemed to avoid Minnesota. It included a fight between Kapp and linebacker Lonnie Warwick s what Tequilla can do to you, Grant said. The episode documents Kapps seven-touchdown performance against NFL defending champion Baltimore and the ferocity of the Vikings defense, known as the Purple People Eaters.
The fierce Minnesota weather and Grants disciplinary style of coaching also was highlighted. But what everyone remembers is the seasons end, a loss to Kansas City. Narrator Tom Selleck appropriately describes the day for the Minnesota faithful:
A Viking hot air balloon lost its way, and careened off course. In the first half, the same could be said of the team.
Grant and Kapp opened critiqued the loss with pointed remarks on the passing game.
We didnt really have a sophisticated passing attack, Grant said. We were ahead in most of our games and we really didnt have to come back.
Our passing game wasnt good at that point.
Kapp said: I dont think we were quite as smart as we needed to be as play callers in that game. I didnt go to the pass on first down I could critique it to death.
The loss hurt the Vikings Marshall as much as anyone. He started in all four Super Bowl losses, and despite efforts from former coaches and teammates touting him as one of the NFLs best-ever, those losses tarnished his and the Vikings legacy.
Those were four opportunities that we had to prove that we were the best in the world, and we didnt do it, he said. We got beat and in some games we got beat soundly. You never get over things like that. It haunts me every day.
This series has possibilities for future episodes. Copy editor Sam Paxton, who follows NFL Films as closely as I do, and I looked into other installments of Missing Rings that could be just as rich as the first two episodes. They include:
1979 Houston Oilers, which lost two consecutive AFC title games to the Pittsburgh Steelers
1999 Tennessee Titans, the former Oilers that lost on the games final play to St. Louis in Super Bowl XXXIV
1991 Detroit Lions, a losing franchise that sneaked past everyone to the NFC title game
1980 Cleveland Browns, the best-known Kardiac Kids that lost on the infamous Red Right 88 pass
1986/87 Cleveland Browns, a team that lost AFC title games in heartbreaking fashion to John Elways Denver Broncos
2003 Carolina Panthers, a team that went from 1-15 to the Super Bowl in two seasons and nearly knocked off an NFL dynasty.
This series leaves you wanting more at the end of every episode. Its the very best of NFL Films.

Intel corporation is a better apparatus to fight the war on terror than the U.S. Army. After making that assertion using the preferred language of the Republican leadership, I dont want to call it a anymore. I want to message it a different way and The Intel World Ahead Program is precisely one message that gets the job done. The idea is that American Soft Power will do better fulfilling American foreign policy goals in the long run than blunt military force.I got the idea for the above statement while working on some Case Studies for Pakistan, India, Jordan, and Turkey which are included in the The Intel World Ahead Program. The Intel World Ahead Program is a 1 billion dollar initiative by a corporate citizen whose objective is to provide technological advancements for developing countries. The Program has three initiatives:Accessibility - Providing the foundation for technology usage and ownership Connectivity - Extending broadband Internet access to developing countriesEducation - Preparing students for success in the global economy through programs, resources, and technologyThe program can be accessed publicly here. This is only one of many ways in which America uses its Soft Power. So what is Soft Power anyway? It is very much in line with former Secretary of State Dean Achesons recommendation Americans must reconcile themselves to limited objectives and work in congress with others, for an essential part of American power was the ability to evoke support from others an ability quite as important as the capacity to compel.

Meet Alan Veingrad. Offensive lineman. Green Bay Packer. Dallas Cowboy. Champion.

Alan, winner of Super Bowl XXVII as a member of the 1992 Dallas Cowboys, had a great life. "A life that anybody would have wanted," as he put it. He was a gifted athlete with a wonderful personal life. He had grown from a normal kid living in South Florida into one of the most successful athletes in the world.

And yet there always seemed to be someone else beside him. Someone walking with him on his journey from Florida to college in Texas to the Pros. It watched him as he grew up, practiced with him as he groomed himself into a master lineman, it even sat with him as he went fishing. Who was this? Who was watching him, who was practicing with him, who went fishing with him?

Meet Shlomo Veingrad.

Jew.

When Alan was young, he hardly noticed Shlomo. He thought all Shlomo needed was a Bar Mitzvah. All he needed was "the big party. And that was it." When people started asking him questions about Shlomo, he couldn't be bothered. "Why eight days of Chanukah? Not only do I not know, I don't care."

And yet, Shlomo kept by him, kept sitting with him, kept working with him. Every now and then he would peak his head up, often when Alan least expected it. People would tell him things like, "'You guys are the chosen ones.'" Alan could not help but notice Shlomo then and, as he put it, "My pride in Judaism would soar!" It was incidents such as these that helped him realize that Shlomo was a part of him, even if he hadn't quite understood this strange person yet.

He "always felt that there is something you have to do as related to being Jewish." As time went on, he felt this more and more.

Shlomo kept quiet for much of Alan's life. Shlomo let him grow as a football player, watched as he won the Super Bowl with Troy Aikman. He even cheered him on. All the time, he waited patiently.

And then Alan retired.

Retirement--A New Beginning

Alan Veingrad's football card
"When you leave the pros, it's a huge transition playing professional football to being a regular guy." Alan, using the discipline he learned from football, "started learning another industry in real estate." He was playing golf, was married with children and life was "pretty good."

Somehow, though, as time went on, something didn't feel right. Something was missing since he left football. "I was starving for inspiration. As an athlete, I had that, but as a human being I didn't have that." It was not until his cousin invited him to Shabbat that things started to change.

It was Alan's first Shabbat.

Even as Alan ate his "teriyaki salmon, and the chicken and the brisket" and ignored a child at the table giving a speech about what he learned at school that week, Shlomo sat back patiently, waiting for his moment.

At the end of the meal, Alan's cousin invited him to a Torah class. More out of obligation than anything, Alan responded, "I said 'okay', I would go to one class."

As Alan walked into his first Torah study of his life, he could not help but be distracted by the beautiful house he had walked into. Just as at his cousin's house, he was more interested in the material than in whatever spirituality was being offered to him. This time, instead of teriyaki salmon, he was focused on the square feet of the house. This time, instead of ignoring a child, he was ignoring the rabbi.

But this time, something hit him. This time, Shlomo was not waiting around quietly anymore. This time, Alan had to listen. Because this time, the rabbi's words spoke directly to Shlomo through Alan and pulled on both their hearts.

"He was talking about materialism. And materialism in your life can lead you to a very shallow existence. And you want that next thing. Once you get that next thing, you'll want another thing. It's just not going to fulfill you. And that's exactly where I was."

The very focus of Alan's life, the very things he was most interested in had suddenly been exposed for what they were. Teriyaki salmon and big houses suddenly didn't seem as exciting. And, surprisingly, the very Torah he had ignored for so long seemed more exciting than he had ever imagined.

Becoming a Mentch

Veingrad today
Alan immediately jumped into this fresh experience. "I went to the next class, and he [the rabbi] gave me my first Chumash." As he went forward in his studies, Alan grew more and more focused. Slowly, internally, he helped Shlomo grow, he inspired himself through Torah, and learned "what is it going to do me. How is it going to hit me right in my gut and make me a mentch. How is it going to make me better." Suddenly, Alan began to notice Shlomo, and together, they worked to help each other grow.

"It was not until 2001 when I met a couple Chabad rabbis and I went to their homes for Shabbat. I started going to their houses more and more and more until it was almost every week." As Alan began to understand Shlomo, he did more and more to help Shlomo come alive. He realized he could take "this feeling of Shabbat and stretch it throughout the entire week."

And so, with this in mind, Alan, invited by a friend to come visit Israel, began to truly stretch out his inspiration, to truly invite Shlomo to share his life. "I got on an airplane and I put on a yarmulke," Alan finally let Shlomo out of his shell. From that day forth, Alan always wore a yarmulke. From that day forth Alan and Shlomo became true partners.

While Shlomo inspired Alan, Alan taught Shlomo how to be a champion. Alan "had been groomed with many, many years of discipline and work ethic and focus and sacrifice, to give things." Alan knew what it meant to work for the Ultimate Goal. And now, he was going to teach it to Shlomo.

Alan taught Shlomo how to prepare, how to get into game mode. He taught Shlomo that being a champion meant work. It meant preparation. Alan taught Shlomo that, "As a football player, it takes six hard days to prepare yourself properly for a game." Just as one of Alan's favorite coaches once taught him, Alan now told Shlomo, "You need to be dressed ready to go. You need to have your workout book with you." As Alan helped Shlomo, they both grew together. Every time they progressed, just as when Alan used to weight train, they became inspired. Every time they saw the results, they became more and more excited.

Shlomo Shines

Autographing football cards
It did not take long for the people close to Shlomo to begin to realize his presence and inspirational journey. Towards the end of his father's life, Shlomo began inviting his father more and more to spend Shabbat with him. After some resistance, he finally gave in. As Shlomo put it, "He saw, he tasted." His father finally saw Shlomo shine. "He was truly inspired. He saw what I saw and he was growing." His father had never been prouder.

One day, Shlomo's father, who had seen his son grow from a young student in Florida, to a successful college football player in Texas to a Super Bowl champion, turned to him and said, "I'm prouder of you wearing a yarmulke than I ever was with a football helmet on your head."

Shlomo explained: "You have to understand who this was coming from. It was coming from a very proud father. A father who made sure every game I ever played was video taped. A man who watched every game. He was my biggest fan. He never walked out of the house without my football card in his pocket."

It was this father, a father who had so many reasons to be proud of his son that told Shlomo this. Shlomo had won the Super Bowl. He had experienced things most of us only dream of experiencing. And yet, when his father said this, nothing in the world meant more to him.

It is no surprise, then, that Shlomo realized he and Alan could use their journey to inspire others. Shlomo, probably one of the most articulate football players ever to emerge from the NFL realized the power of what he had been through, and became committed to telling his story. He understood why he had stayed hidden so long and why Alan did not let him out until later: "I think the reason I played, I think the reason I am wearing a Super Bowl ring, is to tell somebody my story."

Shlomo now travels around the world telling his story to anyone who will listen. With his powerful presence and charismatic personality, he has helped change many Jewish lives, helping others grow. He has gone from being a champion in the game of football to a champion of Judaism.

Even with all this, it would probably be fair to ask Shlomo whether he misses his old life. He had a lot, and now his life is significantly different. Shlomo has indeed been asked this many times since he and Alan became partners. In response, he simply says there's nothing better, including winning the Super Bowl, than "Sharing your story with somebody with the hopes of after they hear your story the will say, 'you know, Shlomo, I've struggled with wearing a yarmulke, but now that I've heard you speak I am going to wear my yarmulke full time.'"

"Do I really miss it? What is there to miss.

The Rubber Bowl: Stadium Review

  • Oct. 6th, 2008 at 10:41 PM
3d billiards, accessory black jack, bag tennis, adidas handball, arena football
Coming off a huge 45-20 victory over rival Miami (Oxford, Ohio) the Bearcats travel to play another in state opponent in Akron. Two years ago UC defeated Akron here in Cincinnati 20-14. The last time UC traveled north to Akron was in 1989, which was the last time UC played in the famed Rubber Bowl. This season will be the last for the Zips at the Rubber Bowl. They're moving to an on campus stadium next year.

Can Tony Pike continue playing at the level he played last weekend? He threw only four incompletions in the win over Miami, and two of them were throwaways. Pike showed everyone his elusiveness and his ability to make plays outside the pocket (both of which I had concerns about heading ito the game). Will the defense be able to get off the field on third down? I'll examine both of those points soon.

1. "Trap Game"
The Cincinnati Enquirer's Bill Koch used this phrase when he referred to this week's game earlier today. Can UC come in mentally "fired up" and beat Akron? Sure it's easy to be excited about the first game (albeit against a lower division opponent) and it's easy to get pumped when you're playing the number four (now number two) team in the nation, and it's easy to get excited when playing a huge rival, but will UC be able to fire themselves up to play their second straight MAC opponent in a row? Well, if last year tells me anything, I'd say yes. The Bearcats were plenty fired up to play against Marshall (after beating Miami) and San Diego State (in San Diego). If they can duplicate the success of last season the Bearcats will be well on their way to finally having a national ranking.

2. Earn Respect
Did I mention UC isn't ranked? But, the Bearcats received votes this week in the USA Today poll. Beating Akron handily will help the Bearcats gain a little more respect in the eyes of national voters, who only saw the beatdown that Oklahoma put on the 'Cats. Last season was the first season that a UC team finished ranked in the top 25. If UC can wipe out their next two opponents, and head into Big East play with a 4-1 record, then they will be able to only gain more respect as they trudge through the Big East schedule. (However, what looked to be a big game against Rutgers may end up being a blowout, unless Rutgers gets it together here soon)

3. "D-fense... D-fense"
To say Coach Kelly wasn't happy with the defense in the first half of last week's game would probably be an understatement. The defense has to be more consistent this week against Akron. Sure first and second down went well against Miami, but third downs were a killer. Coach Kelly credited Miami, but also said, "We have to get better this week," on last night's coaches show. I think the Bearcats will need to come out of the gate with an attitude to be completely effective on third downs.

4. Defense, part 2
No, not the Bearcats defense, but the Akron defense is anothe key to this game. Akron plays a 3-3 "stack" defense, similar to the style that Rich Rodriguez was so successful with at West Virginia. The Bearcats have been scheming all week and preparing for Akron, who may try to use their speed defensively to try and thwart Tony Pike's passing attempts.

5. Tony Pike's follow-up performance
Tony Pike did more than he needed to do against the Redhawks to win the game. I said he had to be effective, and he was more than that. Pike played unbelievably well, and when I talked to QB Coach Greg Forest on Sunday he was very pleased with Pike's performance. He said if it weren't for the dropped ball and tipped pass (Pike's only mistake of the day) that it would have been a perfect night for the kid from Reading High School. And then we went on to watch the final 50 laps of the NASCAR race from Dover. (Look, anytime I can get NASCAR and UC Football in the same vicinity, I'm going to do it!)

UC offense vs Akron defense
As I just stated, UC needs to play well against Akrons speed on defense. Coach Kelly thinks that their linebackers will be able to make plays all across the field and has schemed accordingly. The 3-3-5 defense might allow UC to open up the running game. John Goebel looked impressive in the game against Miami, and his counterpart Jacob Ramsey looked good too. Can they look even better against Akron? We'll wait and see. Expect the running game to set up the play action passing by the 'Cats. (That might be the first time I've ever typed that!)

UC defense vs Akron offense
UC's defense needs to get off the field on the first Zips drive of the game in order to regain some confidence, and dare I say, swagger, for the second straight week in a row. Ryan Manalac had one heck of a game against Miami. It seemed everytime I saw a Miami player going to the ground, number 45 was in on the tackle. If "Manny" can come out and set the tone this game, as he did last game, UC should be in pretty good shape. Connor Barwin has three sacks this season, and he looks to improve that number going up against Akron's offensive line. Look for Akron to runs some shotgun triple option and speed options as well as use their play action pass to keep Joe Tresey's (UC Defesneive coordinator) boys on their toes.

Special Teams

Punting/Punt Returns
-UC didn't punt once during the Miami game. If they need to this week, will Mike Windt and Kevin Huber have their timing down after a three week off time in game situations? I think they will, and remember, Huber is still in the running for the Ray Guy award.

Kickoffs/Returns
-UC has worked all week on kicking the ball away from Mardy Gilyard, and making plays with other returners. Teams have stayed away from Gilyard since his record setting day in Oklahoma. What happened? Well, the first kickoff against Miami was returned by John Goebel for a long gain.

PAT's/Field Goals
-Jake Rogers should be the kicker this week. After last week's performance, he has pretty much settled himslef in as the number on kicker once more. He nailed a 55-yarder on Tuesday in practice, furthering the proof that he has one strong leg.

Well, I think this week's game could get ugly in a hurry. If UC's running attack is on mark, then expect to see a fairly open array of running plays from Coach Kelly and the offensive staff. Depending on how well the defense plays, this game could be out of hand at halftime. But, likewise, it could be close.

I think it will be something like last week.

Dodgers: in the playoffs. Yankees: not.
MITCHELL BLATT
Joe Torre has now managed his team to the playoffs for thirteen straight years. In other news, the Yankees ended their streak of twelve straight playoff seasons and finished eight games behind the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Still happy with your decision to fire Torre, New York?
Weve heard it all before: Torre cant win in the playoffs. (He only has four rings.) He only got wild card last year. (Wild card is better than missing the playoffs.)
When you have the highest payroll in baseball, more is expected of you. But you cant do much better than 12/12 on making the playoffs. The Yankees are a franchise. They should try to win every year. Obviously, the end goal is a World Series (and Torre has four of those), but only one team can win each year, so not winning doesnt make a team bad.
There is no denying that Torres Yankees had been doing worse that past few years. They had lost in the divisional rounds for three straight years and only won a total of four games in the serieses, but if three years really enough to determine that the old manager no longer has it?
There really wasnt a question that he could take a team to the playoffs, and he has proven that with the Dodgers. The question is if he can win in the playoffs, and that is hard to determine with the Yankees, where, if you dont win the World Series, youre considered a failure. Now that he is at the helm of the Dodgers, maybe it will be easier to evaluate him because there wont be such impossible of a standard.
But at the end of the day, one thing matter: Dodgers: still playing, Yankees: not.

As I mention in Keep Kids Fit, with the cuts in physical education, after school programs and just the general lack of activity by our children you need to be creative about getting your family more active. One way is get the whole family out and about is to take walks after dinner, and if you have a pet, bring him/her along, because sad to say along with obesity in humans, so also go our "furkids". Have your children do chores, like vacuum, mow the lawn, rake leaves, pick up their room. Have a dance night. Let the kids pick the music (I know you don't like their music, but think of it this way, our parents didn't like ours either). Play more physical games, like charades, twister, kick ball, soft ball. I love bowling, have a bowling night with the family or get your children interested in a league. Not only will they be more active, they will make some new friends in the process and learn how to become part of a team effort.

The group of around 20 men stormed the small airstrip at dawn, seized the officers gun, tied him up, filled the planes with fuel and flew off, said Emma Quiroz, spokeswoman for the governments anti-organized crime operations in Sinaloa.
It was not clear if there was a link to drug gangs who use small aircraft to spirit cocaine through northern Mexico towards the United States. Quirozs office said it was investigating whether any authorities had been complicit in the theft.
The office said in a statement that it was taking the necessary actions to determine the whereabouts of these airplanes and the criminals who took part in the robbery.
The five planes were taken from a hangar at an unpaved airstrip belonging to a fumigation company in the town of Navolato. They had been taken out of service earlier this year by the army on the grounds they presented irregularities that violated civil aviation and airport laws.
The army, which is battling drug cartels up and down Mexico and especially in northern states with smuggling routes north, has confiscated 245 small planes and helicopters since November 2007, Mexican media reported.
Sinaloa is one of the most violent states in a nearly two-year-old war between rival drug gangs and security forces which has killed some 3,000 people so far this year.
Small planes are used legitimately in the state to spray farm crops with pesticides and to eradicate marijuana fields with chemicals from the air.

I've had an longtime fascination with gameday ticket resell, not just the analytics and systematic data study but in a "hands-on" way -- I guess you could call it "behavioral" research. Various friends and I have attended FSU-Miami (91), Auburn-Alabama (Birmingham), Auburn-Florida (Auburn), TN-Arkansas (98), Texas AM-Baylor (College Station), Ohio St.-Michigan (Columbus), Michigan-Penn St. (Ann Arbor), plus odd assortment of Arkansas, SMU (pre-death penalty), UK, and Vandy games without tickets in hand. The only "shut out" was the Notre Dame-FSU game in 93.

Differences in ticket prices at various NCAA football games tend to follow supply and demand in predictable ways with game quality, stadium capacity relative to the population of the market highly influential, and local resale restrictions and their enforcement highly influential. In recent years, tickets can be secured via online brokers, but the expiring option nature of a ticket frequently means lower prices closer to game time -- the actual process of this price movement is interesting to observe if you aren't too concerned about seeing the kickoff.

The availability of ticket sellers is a different matter. In places such as Ann Arbor, Knoxville, Auburn, Birmingham, or College Station gameday resale comes close to an organized exchange in volume of tickets for sale. The price varies, depending on the game's characterisitcs but ticket sellers abound. At places like Columbus or Florida State where (when I visited) resell restrictions were in place and modestly enforced, resellers existed but in much smaller numbers and with less obvious marketing. This makes sense.

That brings me to last Saturday and my head-scratcher. My family and I drove to campus very early, hung around until near game time, and canvassed the campus and Coliseum area. In total, we saw 3 tickets openly marketed. I also observed two others being sold. According to sources that I had consulted, local authorities sometimes discourage resell near the Coliseum, but not on campus. In fact, the tickets that I observed being resold were near the Coliseum in full view of strolling police officers. So why so few tickets openly marketed? The online sites posted a large number of tickets as late as noon on Saturday. Any ideas in the Sports Economist world.

Serenity ‘Glass with Class’ the Crown Jewel of Historic Downtown Carrollton TXAnd home to “Wags von Floppy Puppy” and "Spats Houdini Damnit"Larry Bartholf didn’t grow up aspiring to be dealer in American elegant handmade glassware – things just sort of worked out that way.“We were sorting through some things left behind by my mother-in-law after she passed away, and found some antiques, including glassware.” “She had a wonderful collection that we decided we would try to grow.”Unfortunately some of our early experiences were not favorable, as Carol and I encountered some less-than-scrupulous dealers who preyed on our lack of knowledge about glassware.“We didn’t know what we were doing”. “But we kept going and eventually grew from a few pieces in a shared storefront to now having many thousands of dollars in glass inventory spanning more than one hundred years of production, by many different companies, several no longer in business.Serenity ‘Glass with Class’ carries several exclusive brands including Blenko Art Glass, Fenton Art Glass, Franz Collection fine Porcelain at their location at 1013 S. Broadway in Historic Downtown Carrollton TX.Serenity ‘Glass with Class’ also has a wide array of vintage Handcrafted American glassware by Fostoria, Tiffin, Cambridge, and other historic American glass companies.“We’ve established relationships with some of the best Glass artists and dealers from around the country.” “As a result we have a wide variety of merchandise from crystal nail files to fine porcelain tea sets from studio art glass pieces to dramatic accent pieces for the most formal table settings. All of this along side elegant handmade glassware from the 1880’s to present. Much of this inventory is handcrafted in America, with many items coming from companies that no longer exist.“That’s because glassmaking is a dying art.” “For numerous reasons- one is its very labor intensive. It is hot, dirty, hard labor. Your working in front of a furnace that’s got two thousand + degree molten glass in it which you are moving from place to place with metal pipes.” “Couple this with the rising cost of natural gas and raw materials makes for a very costly operation.”“The finished product can be exquisite, however, and all the more valuable for those who appreciate quality workmanship.” “It’s art.” Very much so, in the sense that when you look at the glassware that’s available today on the open market, from China or Europe, it is probably a product that ‘s never been touched by human from the time the raw materials are received at the factory until the final inspection.”Work done exclusively by machines takes away from the products crafted feel, there is no comparison in the overall quality.Prices range from less than $5 for glass “Faith Stones” to upwards of $500 for some of the stores more dramatic collectible handcrafted vases. Larry invites everyone to stop by, pet “Wags” and "Spats" learn about American handcrafted glassware, and enjoy the vibrant colors and exquisite art forms during normal business hours or to call 214-724-5081. The All-Star Bull and Bronc Tour Rodeo is coming to UCF at the end of October. It seems to me like this would be an exciting event for East Orlando and a good way to get some unique visitors on the UCF Main Campus. But perhaps that's just the sports writer in me.
Evidently the Body of Animal Rights Campaigners (BARC) (who has a history of protesting on campus events)is already rallying the troops for a big protest when the rodeo finally does come to town.
Here's the event description from the Facebook event. Keep in mind the UCF Arena is managed by an outside company that determines which events come to the venue.
Providing us with yet another great example of completely disregarding the wishes demonstrated by the student body, UCF has booked a freaking RODEO in OUR arena!!!

I want to have the biggest protest we've ever had. This is like a giant slap in the face. We came close last year to banning animal acts all together. We were told people on President Hitt's staff disagreed with the decision.

And to now book a RODEO?! With an upcoming trial that will prove the abuse we've been talking about does actually happen?! Seriously, so tactless.

Check out allstarpbr.com for more info on the particular rodeo we will be

Door are Oct. 24 and 25 at 6, so we'll probably get there around 5 on both days.

ARFF will be assisting us.
What bothers me is the title of the event being arranged by BARC. While I have no problems with the rodeo, and this is America, BARC can protest whatever it wants, whenever it wants, especially if it's something they strongly believe in, but to say, RODEO @ THE UCF ARENA! WE MUST PROTEST OUR A**ES OFF! If you're honestly passionate about stopping the rodeo from coming to UCF, or getting the arena to keep other events from coming in the future, why not put together a professional presentation and show the facts ahead of time? Not just curse the UCF administration and show up an hour before the event to try to drive away paying customers.
What do you think? Do you care that the rodeo is coming to UCF? Will you go or will you protest.

The Huskers take on New Mexico State on Saturday, in what is the Huskers last game before a bye week and it will also mark the opening of the New Mexico State season. So right of the bat, the Huskers have some considerable game experience and the Aggie have none.

For me there are only three keys that need to be examined this Saturday. On paper, the Huskers are clearly the bigger, faster, stronger, and more talented team. But as we all know, they don't play games on paper. They play them in TV sets.

The three keys:
1. Can Nebraska show that they can defendthe crazy offense of NMSU and adapt tothe unique defense they will use?

The coach of NMSU is Hal Mumme, who is a former colleague of Mike Leach from Texas Tech. They both utilize versions of what is called 'the airraid offense.' The running game is just something that they do if the quarterback's arm gets tired. This could prove to be a very interesting match-up for the Husker defense. We've seen that they did struggle in pass coverage against Western Michigan. And NMSU is most likely not going to run the football if they don't have to. The Huskers will need to make sure all of the assignment breakdowns that we've seen the last couple of weeks are a thing of the past. NMSU will have some speed at receiver and busted coverages could result in some big plays for the Aggies.

For the Husker offense, NMSU employs the 3-3-5 set. Three down linemen. Three linebackers. Two cornerbacks, two strong safeties and one free safety. That equals eleven. The strength of this defense is the almost limitless versions of bltizes that you can employ. The weakness is that you are rather suseptible to the big play on the ground if your assignments aren't covered. The Husker line will need to be on full alert and communicating with this kind of defense staring at them. If the offensive line can cover and pick up all the unique blitzes they are going to see, it is quite possible this is the week that we see the running gather some steam.

And then we can all rest a little bit easier.

2. Which running back will start to emerge?

All three of the athletes getting snaps in the backfield are viable running threats. But as I mentioned the other day, it has looked like Helu has taken the lead. Will Lucky use this as motivation to assert himself? Will Castille still get carries or is he going to end up being a short yardage specialist? What happens if one guy starts to roll? Will they go with the hot hand or will carries still be shared?

With Thomas Lawson possibly out, this means we arelikely going tosee more oneback and shotgun sets this week.It will interesting to see if thismeans more open field running lanesand a more perimeter oriented game from the offense. Open field chances would seem to favor Lucky because he isn't the physical runner of the bunch. But the two sophomores are pretty decent in space, too

There is nothing wrong with having a commitee of running backs to share the load. It cuts down on wear and tear as the year goes on. But it is always nice to see one guy stand at the top of the hill and be that one go to guy.

3. Will this be the week that all facets of the game click together.

We've seen the offense look good at times. We've seen the defense make the plays when they need to. We've seen the special teams bail everybody out. When will they all play well at the same time?

With the specter of Virginia Tech and Missouri looming on the horizon, it is time for this team to start to click. They need a solid and team oriented effort on Saturday. You don't want to go away from this game still wondering what kind of team you have. I can't imagine that last week's practices were a joy for the players. They had to hear all the grumbling about their efforts against San Jose State. They had to read the articles questioning them. Joe Ganz looked average for the first time in his career. We have a thin defensive line now. The special teams gave up some decent return yards.

It is time for this guys to get confidence. It is time for them to announce their presence with authority. They need a complete game. Not for us, the fans. But for themselves.

I think this team is more talented than people give them credit for. This week of practice has hopefully shored up, or at least improved upon, the flaws they have shown in the first two games.

So the prediction:
NMSU will get some yards through the air. Any team that will most likely throw as much as they do is bound to find some success. But the Huskers should be able to physically pound this team on both sides of the ball and wear them down. NMSU may find some success early but by halftime this game should be no longer in doubt.

Nebraska 52 - New Mexico State 17

Other games of note:

USC/OSU
Of course this game made the list. The last few years there has been at least one fairly large clash between two highly regarded programs. USC is #1 and OSU #5, at last check. I'm not going to spend any more time on this game. We've heard all week about this match-up and there is nothing more I need to or could say.

Score: USC 27 - OSU 13

Kansas/South Florida
This game should be called 'the big something to prove' game. Kansas has the chance to finally play a meaniful non-conference game. Granted, when they scheduled this game, they probably thought this would be a cupcake game. But this gives the Jayhawks their first opportunity to prove that last year wasn't a one year deal.

South Florida is one of the few programs in the Big East with anything left to play for. If they get knocked off, that conference will lose almost all football credibility. And they had better playsharper than they did last week.

It will be very interesting to see if the speed of South Florida is all it is cracked up to be. And it will be very interesting to see if Kansas can compete in a hostile environment that is not in the Big 12. Kansas will put up some points but I've got to believe that USF's team speed, gutsy quarterback and home field advantage will inspire them to a solid effort.

Score: USF 24 - Kansas 21
Utah/Utah State
Purely included because anytime you have an intrastate match-up, you've got to be excited. But this game will suck. Utah State is terrible and Utah is pretty good. This could be a bloodbath.

Score: Utah 45 - Utah State 10

Fresno State/Wisconsin
The Big 10 may need this one badly. They have three premier programs that they lean on. Michigan. Ohio State. Wisconsin. It is quite possible that Ohio State and Michigan will both lose on Wisconsin may be playing for the pride of the conference.

Fresno State is pretty talented on offense. You don't usually go into Michigan and win. They will have speed and some size.

Wisconsin will need to physically pound the Bulldogs on every single series if they want to win.

But the home field advantage for Fresno State will be the deciding factor.

Score: Fresno State 31 - Wisconsin 17

Notre Dame/Michigan
Both teams need this game. The loser could see their season spiral out of control. Neither are particularly stout on offense, at this point anyway. Both are coming off of games that they didn't play particularly well. Both are storied programs that have a great deal of pride. But just because you have pride and history, it doesn't make you a good football team. Just ask Nebraska for the past four years.

I am just so not sold on either of these teams but I can't believe for a second that Michigan doesn't have the more talented team. Even with a new quarterback, a new offense and a new coaching staff, I think the Wolverines will make enough plays to win this game. It may be an awful game to watch and the winning team might have less than 200 yards of total offense.

Score: Michigan 17 - Notre Dame 13

There you have it. The college football thoughts in my head going into this weekend's games. Let me hear some comments, slackers.

This is Pete,

Over and out.

What could be simpler or lovelier than a festive Christmas inspired by Mother Nature herself? Revive your pioneering spirit by tapping into the landscapes vivid colors, rich textures and natural fragrances to beautify your holiday home this year!
Shockingly inexpensive, natures holiday decor is also fun to find and customize. Pack a picnic lunch and a thermos of hot cider, and head for the countryside!
Most of what you need is right there on any country road ivies trailing along the roadside, thistle-heads in open fields, bright red spice-berries and rosehips in the understory of most woodlands. Take the kids along and give each of them a disposable camera to record your memory-making experiences
1. Ivy-and-grapevine wreath
Simply tuck tendrils of sweet green English Ivy in and around a wreath of foraged grapevine, twisted into a round, brown wreath shape. (Ivy works wonderfully well on a raffia or straw wreath as well!) For an elegant touch, entwine a length of gold or magenta gossamer ribbon around the wreath, tie a contrasting loop of ribbon at the top, and hang anywhere!
2. Cinnamon-apple garland
Core and slice foraged windfall apples to form apple rounds, sprinkle with cinnamon and dry them on a cookie tray in a slow, 170-degree oven until theyre leathery by not crisp. Use a pencil to drill a little hole at the top of each apple slice, then continue drying. Use twine or raffia to string the dried delectables into a garland to spice up any room!
3. Pine-cone glitterati
Foraged pine-cones of any kind, a little bowl of glitter and a bit of florists wire or even recycled ornament hooks are all you need. Put unopened cones on an aluminum tray in a 170-degree oven for a few minutes to open them up. Give each dry cone a quick spray with artists adhesive, or dab on regular white glue, then dip the sticky cone into the glitter. A group of these look gorgeous in an old wooden salad bowl, atop a wooden tabletop that strewn with a few evergreen boughs and a handful of bright red foraged rosehips. Or use the wire or hooks and hang them on the tree, where tree lights will have the glitterati shimmering!
4. Willow wands and cobalt
Contemporary elegant drama for almost nothing! Clip and arrange a of wispy green and yellow willow wands in a plain, clear vase. Toss in a handful of small, smooth inexpensive cobalt stones to cover the vase base, then hang a few cobalt blue glass ornaments from the willow branches.
5. Dried basket of bounty
Fill a tall-handled reed or twig basket with stunning lengths of golden yarrow and dried golden wheat, accented with dried poppy heads and milkweed pods. For fragrance, tuck in a spray of silver garden sage or field-dried Sweet Annie. Sprinkle generously with crimson spice berries and tie a sprig of holly to the handle.
6. Colonial apple basket
What could be simpler and more natural than an old basket filled with fragrant balsam and fir boughs, topped with shiny red, golden and green fresh apples? Tie a wide red ribbon to the handle and tuck in a strand of white cool-touch twinkle lights for a soft, traditional holiday glow on a sideboard or dining room table. Or alternate the apples with pears, oranges, lemons and pomegranates!
With Mother Nature as your one-stop shopping guide, you can hang the holly and trim the tree with the richest palette of colors, textures and fragrances imaginable so why shop anywhere else.

Future, the special-interest media group, today announces that it has signed an agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment UK to create an on-console, weekly digital magazine available exclusively through the PlayStation®Network.
The digital magazine will enable gamers in the UK to download interactive, high definition editorial content directly onto their PlayStation 3 consoles from the PlayStation Network - a first for the UK games industry. The pioneering weekly product will be available to UK PlayStation 3 owners in early 2009 and is expected to subsequently roll-out to other European territories.
The deal further strengthens the publishing partnership between SCE UK and Future, which began in 1995 with one Official magazine and today operates on both sides of the Atlantic with a portfolio of print titles and digital content. Earlier this year, Future teamed up with Sony Computer Entertainment America to produce Qore – a monthly digital programme for North American users of the PlayStation Network which has attracted Burger King, Universal Pictures, Activision and Codemasters among its advertisers.
Packed with high definition video content, the digital magazine will include news, reviews, features and downloadable content on games, movies and more. Future and SCE UK will work with third parties to incorporate exclusive content – only available to subscribers who purchase the weekly digital magazine.
It will also offer advertisers the opportunity to promote their products to millions of UK gamers who are registered to the PlayStation Network in the UK. It will provide advertisers with exclusive branded areas, product showcases and high definition media.
Ray Maguire, senior vice president and managing director of SCE UK said:
As PlayStation 3 moves the gaming experience to a more social and competitive online environment, so the natural development in line with our consumers’ choice of media is to produce a companion publication in the digital realm. Future is best placed to meet this challenge and produce a perfect partner to the Official PlayStation magazine delivered via the PlayStation Network.
Robert Price, Future’s UK Chief Executive added:
“We are very excited to further strengthen our relationship with Sony, working together on this ground-breaking product. As the publisher of Official magazines and digital content for Sony PlayStation in the US and UK, we are creating powerful integrated media solutions for readers and advertisers across different platforms, in print and online. This product will provide a unique way for advertisers to connect directly with gamers through their consoles using the very latest high definition content.

University of Maryland mens' and women's basketball teams head-to-toe next year. Under Armour also sponsored the third annual Boost Mobile Elite 24 high school basketball showcase this past summer as well as the sponsorship of the Capital Classic last April.
Jennings, widely regarded as one of the most electrifying and charismatic point guards in the nation, is making history as the first U.S. high school player to immediately pursue a professional basketball career overseas before becoming eligible for the 2009 NBA Draft. Jennings recently signed with Pallacanestro Virtus Roma of the Italian pro league.
We are proud to welcome Brandon Jennings as the first Under Armour basketball athlete, said Kevin Plank, Under Armour, Chairman and CEO. He is an extremely talented and fearless player with the skill set to become a game-changer internationally. Brandon's attitude and his dedication to hard-work make him the ideal athlete to represent the Under Armour brand.
As the most prolific single-season scorer in the history of basketball powerhouse, Oak Hill Academy, Jennings averaged 35.5 points, 7.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game in his senior year of high school. His on-court performance earned him a number of high school basketball's most prestigious awards including the 2008 Naismith High School Basketball Player of the Year, 2007-08 Gatorade Player of the Year - Virginia, 2008 Parade Magazine Player of the Year and 2008 EA Sports Player of the Year. In addition, he led his 2006-2007 team to a 42-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in the USA Today Super 25 national rankings.
I am extremely excited to be the first athlete selected to represent Under Armour Basketball, said Jennings. I've always prided myself on being one step ahead of the pack and true to my beliefs like my journey to play professionally in Europe. I look forward to my role as a global ambassador for Under Armour basketball.Brandon has the ability to perform at the highest levels and the personality to capture the imagination of the public, said basketball advisor to Jennings, Sonny Vaccaro. He is without a doubt one of the most driven players that I have ever watched and by choosing to play in Europe as a high school player, he is doing what no other basketball player has ever done. This will go down in history as a landmark decision.... from Compton to Rome....Brandon Jennings did it first.

I'm taking a break from former Oregon players this week to catch up with Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN. I often wonder how long it took him to learn how to spell his last name. I bet people with complicated last names end up smarter because they can spell big words early on in life.

I can't remember exactly what game or what year it was that Gene came to Autzen to cover the Ducks. It was obviously during the Joey era, but I don't remember the exact game. All I remember is that he was really gracious and did not take himself too seriously. Basically, he was as funny in person as he is in his writing. I like people who take their jobs seriously, but not so seriously that they can't be bothered for a decent conversation over greasy press box food and game notes.

If you read ESPN.com (who doesn't?), then you're probably familiar with his columns. I miss working in sports everyday and I can't imagine having a job that would take me from the Final Four to the World Series to Green Bay on a November day. I'm appreciative of how he captures these moments with great personality.

Even if he is wearing a salmon-colored shirt in his mug and doesn't think I'm worthy of a blog on ESPN.com. Pfft.

The problem with this Q A is the onslaught of phone calls it will spark from my mother. Mother, he can not get me a job at ESPN. I will never be the next Erin Andrews (even if I did have a job at ESPN) and no Mike Bellotti does not remember who I am.

Strangely, I could not find any action photos of him. Anyway, here goes...

1. Introduce Yourself: My name is Gene Wojciechowski. I might be the only sportswriter who held Michael Jordan to eight points in a pickup game. Sadly, the game was only to 11. I'm also the only sportswriter to have Michael Jordan on my team in a game--and lose. I work for ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine, like short walks on the beach, and will never understand why the Green Bay Packers haven't sued Georgia for ripping off its helmet logo.

2. What is the most memorable sports event you covered? I refuse to choose just one Most Memorable Event I covered. You've got to give me three, and even then it's a toughie. In no exact order: Christian Laettner's shot to beat Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA Tournament in Philly (in the locker room after the game, Kentucky's John Pelphrey pounded the cinderblock walls with his fist and cried like a newborn); Larry Bird Night in 1993 at the Boston Garden (full disclosure: Bird is one of my all-time favorite athletes. And yes, I pocketed a bolt from the Garden floor that night. But the ceremony was amazing, the emotions real, and the place packed); Utah wins the West Regional and then wins the Final Four semi vs. a North Carolina team that had Vince Carter and Antawn Jamison (Utah coach Rick Majerus gave me total access during the 1998 NCAA tournament. I remain in awe of how Majerus prepared his team for those games. After the West Regional final win vs. Arizona, the team pushed the coaches into the showers and sprayed 7-Up on each other. There was such an innocence to it all. And it was wonderful to see an underdog team reach the Final Four.).

Honorable mentions: Chris Webber's time out in 1993; Villanova beats Georgetown in 1985 (the last Final Four not played in a dome); Magic Johnson's press conference to announce he had HIV; Texas vs. USC 2006; Miami vs. Ohio State 2003; and anything involving Tiger Woods; MJ vs. Utah Jazz in the Finals.

3. What was your first reaction when you heard Rick Neuheisel was hired at UCLA? Two thoughts: The potential to be a great hire...if he learned from his mistakes at Colordado and Washington. And it will be fun to see how T.J. Simers treats him.

4. The college football team that will surprise people this year is: I don't cover as much college football as I did in the past. But Notre Dame will surprise you--not because of how good it is, but because of how irrelevant the program has become.

5. What athlete provides the best sound bite?: Bill Belichick. Just kidding.
Ozzie Guillen makes your tape recorder beg for mercy; Torii Hunter of the LA Angels is a pleasure to chat with; Peyton Manning absolutely gets it. For outrageousness, Joey Porter is a go-to guy.

6. In your humble opinion, how has the national prominence of the Oregon program changed in the last 15 years? Well, first of all, Oregon leads the world in Most Movies Made About The Same Distance Runner. And even though it was a cheesy idea, the Joey Harrington NY billboard was an interesting starting point for Oregon football. Personally, I would have used the money to endow, say, a scholarship, but the billboard was an interesting experiment, as is Nike's close involvement with the program. And who can forget a program that gave America the Whizzinator? Oregon is a national player, but eventually its geography will catch up with it. There simply aren't enough great football players in the state to sustain a program--at least, not in the same way Ohio State, USC, etc., can sustain their programs.

7. Who would win a 40-yard dash, you or Pat Forde? Well, Forde is younger, but I have much less hair and thus, would experience less wind resistance. I've played hoops with Forde. He has game.

8. What site/magazines/newspapers are your must-reads? ESPN.com, of course. Your blog. DairyFarmersOfAmerica.com.

9. What's your guilty pleasure television show? I watch exactly two shows on a regular basis: ``30 Rock.'' Tina Fey--genius. Alec Baldwin--huge comic chops.
The other show: ``Friday Night Lights.'' Season One was brilliant. Season Two was uneven, but still occasionally compelling. I've been assured by one of the actors that Season Three will be a keeper. And did I mention that Connie Britton deserves an Emmy one of these days.

Honorable mention: ``Saturday Night Live.''

10. Can you get me a job? No, I can't get you a job. Please leave me alone.

Dang.
