2008-09 East Predictions

The long wait is finally over. Later today, the new look Rangers minus former captain Jaromir Jagr take to the ice for a two-game series against the Lightning over in Prague. No matter what NHL brass says, it has to be bittersweet for them and especially Czech fans that No.68 wont be in a Ranger sweater returning to his home land for the first ever NHL regular season games over in Europe.
While new team captain Chris Drury along with alternates Scott Gomez and Markus Naslund prepare to take the ice in Prague, Sidney Crosby and the Penguins will be meeting the Senators in a two-game series over in Stockholm, Sweden.
So, the Rangers and Bolts wont be the only teams representing the NHL kicking off a much anticipated 2008-09 season a few days early.
The big questions surrounding Tom Renneys club is how quickly key additions Naslund, Nikolai Zherdev and Wade Redden adjust to their new surroundings. Can they help pickup the tempo transitioning from a deliberate East/West game to a more fluid North American style contingent on seriously competing for a Stanley Cup?
Well have to patiently wait and see. For now, lets take a glance at how the Blueshirts roster shapes up.
FORWARDS: Gone are Jagr, fellow Czech Martin Straka and veteran Brendan Shanahan, who remains in limbo hoping to play another season. Its still possible he could wind up either here or elsewhere on a contender. Also out is key agitator Sean Avery (signed w/ Stars) along with antagonist Ryan Hollweg (traded to Leafs).
Can switching conferences spark Naslunds game? How well will Russian enigma Zherdev play under Renney? The good news is his best season came under Ken Hitchcock. The bad is it was in Columbus where there was no real pressure. Expectations are much higher here.
Aaron Voros looks to be a good addition capable of providing energy and physicality but wont finish as much as Avery. Dan Fritsche and Fredrik Sjostrom are speedy complementary fourth line wings who bring solid work ethic. Patrick Rissmiller is basically another Blair Betts who can kill penalties but now looks like overkill with former No.1 pick Lauri Korpikoski proving hes ready. Colton Orrs one of the best heavyweights in the league who Renney can now insert when necessary instead of playing him every night.
Figure Drury and Gomez to be better than their first seasons in New York where it took them time to get acclimated to Renneys system. Shifting Drury to Gomez wing could pay dividends with sophomore Brandon Dubinsky continuing to impress to the point where hell start as the teams second line center. If the lines get out slow, the Ranger coach can always move Drury back to center and shift Dubinsky to the third line.
Much depends on second-year wingers Ryan Callahan and Nigel Dawes, who both are being asked to score more goals. Callahan is a very smart two-way threat who is a good shorthanded player that works diligently on the forecheck taking the body. He looked good in preseason. The same cant be said for Dawes, who made strides last season becoming a trusted regular in Renneys rotation. He has excellent hands and is an underrated passer capable of transitioning from defense to offense. Hes scored at every level and his 14 goals in limited duty gave every indication hes fully capable.
On such a crowded roster, where does Petr Prucha fit? The former 30-goal scorer has seen his production drop the past two campaigns from 22 to only seven in 2007-08. Part of it was due to a diminished role and less ice-time especially on power plays. It would be wise for Renney to allot the hard working 26 year-old Czech some time. Hes always been willing to pay a price which is why fans love him frequently chanting,
If Prucha gets a fair chance, he can still be an important player on a team which must fully emphasize scoring by committee.
DEFENSE: No longer around are Fedor Tyutin (traded to Jackets), Christian Backman (traded to Jackets), whipping boy Marek Malik (unsigned FA), popular extra Jason Strudwick (signed w/ Oilers) and Thomas Pock (claimed by Islanders).
So, no Malik means they automatically upgraded. Not necessarily. Much will depend on how well Wade Redden applies himself after such a huge contract rewarded to him by his biggest fan Glen Sather. The former Senator certainly is capable of logging the big minutes required possessing an excellent first pass, solid wheels and a good shot from the point which should bolster the power play.
But is the 31 year-old in decline after posting a second straight season under 40 points or can he get back to an All-Star level which saw him achieve career bests in assists (40), points (50) and plus/minus (35) in just 65 contests with Ottawa in 2005-06 helping them reach the Stanley Cup Final? Thus far, hes emphasized team success to take pressure off which is admirable. However, you know the first mistake he makes that leads to a goal against will result in boos and questions as to whether he can handle New York.
After struggling much of exhibition with Dan Girardi, he was tried with Michal Rozsival, who also got a big contract from Sather. The good news is Redden performed better. The bad is that Rozsival looked shaky which cant happen if the revamped blueline is to have success. Both will be asked to log big minutes and man the points on the man-advantage.
Figure more responsibility to be given to budding second-year defenseman Marc Staal, who really gained Renneys trust last season and emerged into one of the clubs best defenders. The Rangers should have a lot of confidence in the 21 year-old former No.1 pick who never seems overmatched and could very well be the next great defenseman for the club.
Staal will work with the steady Girardi, who does many things well including taking the body and jumping up in the play where he can get off a shot that saw him score 10 goals last season after none his rookie year. The 24 year-old find is a clean player who doesnt take many penalties (14 PIM) and moves the puck efficiently. If the young tandem meshes, they could just become Renneys shutdown pair.
Meanwhile, 29 year-old Ridgewood, New Jersey native Paul Mara wanted to return taking less because he feels the team can win the Cup. Hes developed into a steady puckmoving D who doesnt do too much to standout which is the kind of quality you want in a third pair D. Hell be teamed with former Sabre Dmitri Kalinin, who could become the new Malik.
The 28 year-old Russian didnt fare well in preseason looking shaky. He needs to keep it simple in his end or fans might start wondering why the team added him. Especially with both cheaper options Corey Potter and Brian Fahey, who were reassigned to Hartford having solid camps.
Its also worth noting that Kalinin got into only 46 games last season following 2006-07, which saw him appear in a career high 82 with 29 points and a career best plus-19 rating. In two of the last three seasons, hes missed 63 games.
For the time being, the Rangers will go with only six defensemen. The question is for how long?
GOALIES: The Rangers will only go as far as No.1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist takes them. The 26 year-old Swede was up and down in the first half last season but overcame that to appear in a career high 72 games posting a 37-24-10 record with career bests in GAA (2.23) and shutouts (10), pacing the league to get nominated for a third straight Vezina.
King Henrik clearly is the man in New York and must continue to own the net keeping his team in games when they arent finishing. It figures to take time before the offense clicks. So, it will fall on the popular Swedes shoulders to help the team get out of the gate quicker than the past two seasons which saw them have to go on a tear just to qualify for the postseason.
The question is is he still feeling lingering effects from a collision with the Pens Evgeni Malkin? His knees have become an issue. If its serious, it could prove costly to the Rangers chances.
Stephen Valiquette is a solid veteran backup whos extremely popular with teammates, staff and beat writers for his calm easy going demeanor. The 31 year-old Toronto native was excellent in relief of Lundqvist winning half of his 10 starts while posting a 2.19 GAA, .916 save percentage along with his first two career shutouts.
What more can you ask for from your second goalie? He was a little rusty in preseason but expect him to rise up to the challenge when called upon.
COACHING: Tom Renney is a very respectable classy coach who communicates well with his team and the media which makes him an extremely popular figure. When it looked like the team was in trouble last year along with his job, he pulled them together and guided the club to its third consecutive postseason appearance.
Avenging a first round sweep to the Devils was sweet but he and the club still failed against a very formidable Pens team in the second round losing there a second straight year. Now, he has a differently assembled team and must make it work or the rumblings will start.
Theres going to be more pressure on Renney to make it work. If things get tough early, he must remain grounded and use that same approach Yankee fans grew accustomed to with Joe Torre.
His staff of Perry Pearn, Mike Pelino and Benoit Allaire are solid at breaking down whats wrong and helping the team prepare. Since Renney got to choose his own staff a couple of years ago, they always have worked well and seem to be on the same page which is a huge plus for a team thats covered in New York.
Theyre well equipped and good at adjusting when things arent working.
ANALYSIS: Its very hard to gauge how well this team will perform. Though Im not overly optimistic about the roster changes, Im still a firm believer in what they have up front and in net. Quite frankly, the Rangers possess arguably the best centers from top to bottom in the league. As long as Dubinsky doesnt suffer from a sophomore slump and Korpikoski continues to prove he belongs, it provides the Blueshirts with an advantage which they should have in many match-ups.
Much has been said about Zherdev and Naslund replacing Jagr and the loss of Avery. However, they cant worry about whos no longer around and must just play their games. The leadership of Drury and Gomez should help get them on the same page. Drurys the one being overlooked and I just cant see a team led by him missing the postseason.
Neither can I see them suffering with Lundqvist in net. Unless his knee problems are worse than expected, hes the second best goalie in the league.
Even in a tough division, dont bet against them.

3d billiards, accessory black jack, bag tennis, adidas handball, arena football
1. Dion Phaneuf (projection: 70 points)
Possesses a cannon of a shot, and quarterbacks a potent power play. A workhorse that never misses a game.

2. Nicklas Lidstrom (projection: 67 points)
Although Father Time is catching up to him, Liddy still skates like the wind and will be in the running for another Norris Trophy.

3. Mike Green (projection: 65 points)
Playing for the high-octane Caps, Green will no doubt get his fair share of points this season. You probably could too if you were playing with Ovechkin.

4. Brian Campbell (projection: 64 points)
The newest Blackhawk cashed in quite nicely this off season as a UFA. Although there will be pressure to live up to his new contract, the Hawks forwards are just too good for him not to rack it up.

5. Dan Boyle (projection: 63 points)Former Miami U
Just what the Dr. ordered for the Shark Tank. Fully recovered from his bizarre wrist injury last season, Boyle could post career numbers.

6. Andrei Markov (projection 63 points)
Playing for the best power play in the league last year likely inflated Markovs numbers. Similarly, this years power play will keep his points inflated, despite Streits exile to Long Island.

7. Chris Pronger (projection: 59 points)
They dont come tougher than Pronger. Well, maybe Kevin Lowe. If healthy, Pronger should hover around the 60 plateau.

8. Joe Corvo (projection: 58 points) Former WMU
Corvos production once he was traded to the Canes last season was real and spectacular. Look for his numbers to be enlarged once again this year.

9. Sergei Zubov (projection: 56 points)
Despite his hip injury, Zubov will match his age and still score points in the mid 50s.

10. Kimmo Timonen (projection: 55 points)
Its just Kimmo being Kimmo.

11. Lubomir Visnovsky (projection: 54 points)
The newest Oiler with a great shot will run a young, but effective powerplay.

12. Zdeno Chara (projection: 53 points)
Big Zdeno Chara plays big minutes and will accumulate big numbers once again this year.

13. Brian Rafalski (projection 53 points)Former Wisconsin Badger
The mobile Rafalski should again get around 50 points. Rumours have Hossa playing the point on the powerplay as well, so things could get a tad interesting in MoTown.

14. Tomas Kaberle (projection: 48 points)
Despite the mess that is the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kaberle should still get his points. Now if only he would shoot.

15. Sheldon Souray (projection: 46 points)
How can a man married to a former Baywatch star not get around 50 points? And no, I dont mean Mitch Buchanan.

16. Scott Niedermayer (projection: 45 points)
Oh hi Scott. Are you planning on playing again this year? Thats nice. Thanks for telling us ahead of time this year.

17. Shea Weber (projection: 42 points)
Webers season got off to a brutal start after he was injured right away. Look for the Preds #1 blueliner to get back to form. Terry Crisp will tell you the same thing.

18. Ed Jovanovski (projection: 42 points)
After playing his first injury-free season in quite some time, JovoCop is guaranteed to go down for a brief period with a injury.

19. Brent Burns (projection: 41 points)Wild Defenseman
A great skater with a cannon of a shot, Burns could lose the odd 5 on 3 situation to the newly acquired Zidlicky. Also of note, he is coming off of an elbow injury.

20. Wendy Redden (projection: 40 points)
A change of scenery was desperately needed for Redden, and should help him rehabilitate his offense production.

The anonymous notes that surfaced after her guilty verdict are not enough to warrant a new trial for former Warminster teacher Susan Romanyszyn, a Bucks County judge ruled Thursday.
County Judge Rea Boylan said in a written opinion that the unsigned notes, which were sent to Romanyszyn’s lawyer’s office and Longstreth elementary school, were “unreliable” in the eyes of the law.
“Therefore, to permit a new trial based on these unsigned correspondences post-verdict would jeopardize the deference given to verdicts in our judicial system,” Boylan wrote.
The notes, written in block letters, purported to be from the actual bomb threats writer and included an apology to Romanyszyn.
The issue was the second raised by Romanyszyn, 46, after her conviction in June. She also wanted the jurors to be polled about an alleged anonymous note sent to the judge’s chambers questioning the verdict. Boylan denied that motion last week.
The ruling clears the way for Romanyszyn to be sentenced. A date for that hearing has not yet been set, and she remains on house arrest.
Romanyszyn, 46, was found guilty in June of planting a series of threatening notes around Longstreth Elementary, where she taught fourth grade.
The threats, which were found during a nine-day period in October, warned of bombs in the school and included the words “Kill” and “Die.” They were full of misspellings and written in a childlike scrawl.
Some parents pulled their kids out of classes, and activities were canceled as school employees and police tried to unravel the mystery of the planted notes.
Romanyszyn denied the allegations, but after a weeklong trial in which prosecutors played a video of her lurking near classrooms where notes were subsequently found, a jury convicted her on 11 counts of making terroristic threats.

Ann Arbor, Mich. Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey recorded a double-double to lead UAlbany to a 3-2 win over Western Kentucky in the final match of the Michigan/adidas Invitational at Cliff Keen Arena on Saturday. The Great Danes dropped a 3-0 decision to the host Wolverines, who are undefeated and ranked #25 nationally.

UAlbany kept the first set with Western Kentucky close, before the Hilltoppers got up, 14-11, behind the service game of Megan Argabright. The Great Danes tied the game at 17-17 on a kill by senior middle blocker Kamisha Kellam, who finished the match with ten kills. The score went back and forth, as the teams exchanged kills before Cowdrey put UAlbany ahead, 25-24. Kellam then recorded one of her match-high six blocks to end the set with UAlbany up, 26-24.

Western Kentucky took charge in the second set, not allowing the UAlbany offense to capitalize on any opportunity. Argabright converted a set from Julia Noe to give the Hilltoppers the sideout point and go ahead, 16-8. Argabright recorded a service ace later in the set to put Western Kentucky up, 18-8, before a service error gave the ball back to UAlbany. A Valerie Sourbeer kill pulled the Great Danes within 21-10, but back-to back attack errors and a block by Aquila Orr and Brittany Bowen sealed the win for the Hilltoppers, 25-10.

It was UAlbanys chance to take charge in the third set, as setter Brooke Stanley served for the first four points of the set, including a service ace. Stanley assisted on Cowdreys kill that put the Great Danes up, 9-4, before the teams exchanged points to set the score a 14-8 in UAlbanys favor midway through the set. Freshman Kalyn Mostert recorded a service ace, while Kellam and Cowdrey combined for back-to-back block assists to give the Great Danes an 18-11 lead. Argabright and Emily Teegarden hit consecutive kills to pull Western Kentucky to within 22-17, but a Hilltopper attack error followed by a service ace by Stanley set the final score at 25-17.

Western Kentucky jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the fourth set, and the Hilltoppers continued to build their lead in the early going, getting ahead 10-4 behind the service game of Kelly Hofmeyer. A service ace and back-to-back kills by Kellam pulled the Great Danes to within 10-8. Sourbeer and White combined for a block to tie the set at 12-12 before Western Kentucky began to pull away. Noe served for four straight points and UAlbany committed a service error to put the Hilltoppers back in possession. Kelly Potts served for the final four points, and Tiffany Elmore blocked a UAlbany attack to give the Hilltoppers a 25-14 win.

Western Kentucky appeared to have the advantage in the final set, as the Hilltoppers built up an 8-5 lead on an Argabright kill. Western Kentucky continued to hold the lead as the teams went back and forth, exchanging kills. White took over the UAlbany service game with the score set at 14-11, and served for the final five points, including a service ace. One of Cowdreys 14 kills tied the set at 14-14, before an attack error by Western Kentucky gave UAlbany the 15-14 lead. Mostert and Kellam combined for a block assist to win the match for the Great Danes with a score of 16-14.

Stanley recorded a double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs, while Cowdrey added ten digs. The classmates also recorded three service aces apiece, while White and Sourbeer finished with nine and eight kills, respectively.

Teegarden recorded a match-high 18 kills for Western Kentucky (11-3), hitting .308 for the match. Argabright added 16 kills and Bowen finished with 11 kills and four total blocks. Noe tallied 52 assists and Hofmeyer led the Hilltoppers defensively with 20 digs.

Earlier in the day, UAlbany dropped three straight sets to #25 Michigan. The Wolverines posted scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18 in the sweep. Cowdrey had ten kills to lead the UAlbany offense, while freshman libero Laurie Gonzalez recorded a team-high ten digs.

Juliana Paz led Michigan (11-0) with 12 kills while Veronica Rood added 11 kills. Kerry Hance paced the Wolverines defensively with 21 digs while setter Lexi Zimmerman finished with 46 assists, eight digs, two service aces and two block assists.

UAlbany (5-7) will return to action next weekend, hosting the second tournament of the season at University Gymnaisum. The Great Danes welcome Dayton, Long Island and Yale for the two-day tournament on Friday and Saturday.

At a going-away party for a co-worker last night, I found myself at a sports bar in the pearl district whose name rhymes with “Schlitz.” It’s not my favorite place in the world, but they do have a lot of cheap bar games (plastic darts, pool, shuffleboard, air hockey, etc), which makes it great for big groups and office parties. Their beer selection is a bit lacking, though they do carry Lagunitas IPA, so I’m usually fine.

PAVING THE WAY
Before a play has even begun, Rutgers starting center Ryan Blaszczyk is working hard. Quarterback Mike Teel has yet to ask for the ball, but Blaszczyk is reading the defense, calling out line adjustments and getting ready to run the play that was called in the huddle. Blaszczyk is more than the starting center of the Rutgers football team; he's the quarterback of the offensive line.
An offensive tackle and defensive nose guard in high school, Blaszczyk redshirted his first season at Rutgers, working with the scout team defense. Then, in the spring of 2006, the coaches moved him to offensive line, and asked him to learn the center position.

League Preview: The Telus East Separation

The team that has been most talked about in the Telus Central Division this summer has been the Shawinigan Cataractes.  They have a nice core of players coming back and they have loaded up their roster through trades.  Like Rimouski, Shawinigan has been climbing up the standings the last two seasons.  They were building for this season.
Second place is for up for the taking.  It looks like the hometown team has come out the gates as the team to be in second place at the end of the season.  The team has always started a little slow at the beginning of the season.  This year will be no different with a handful of players heading to NHL Camps.  Of course, they won’t be the only team that will lose players but they will have two rookie goalies for the beginning of the year.  This team will need time to gel.
It should be interesting how the Victoriaville Tigres and the Drummondville Voltigeurs do this season.  The Tigres have one of the most talented goalies in the league with Kevin Poulin.  The only problem with Poulin is his consistency from night to night.  If he can solve that issue, he will steal games for the Tigres.
During the off-season and at the trade deadline, the Red Sox and the Yankees like to match each others moves.  That’s what Drummondville did when the Maineiacs acquired Maxime Gratchev from Rimouski.  They went and got Yannick Riendeau from the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.  To me, it doesn’t make sense but Dominic Ricard (General Manager) thinks they can make a run.

Shawinigan Cataractes

2007-2008 Season: 33-33-0-4 (6th in the Telus Division)

Off-Season Additions: Michael Denocourt (From Rouyn-Noranda), Michael Roski (From Montreal), Timo Pielmeier (From Montreal), Michael Dubec (From Rouyn-Noranda), and Matthew Pistilli (From Gatineau),

Off-Season Subtractions: Kevin Maletto (To Rouyn-Noranda), Samuel Fortier (To Montreal), Dilen Theriault (To Saint John), Linden Bahm (To Halifax), Martin Baca (To Montreal), and Will Johnson (To Montreal)

Players That Aged Out: Sean Smyth, Patrick Bernier, and Oliver Donais
The Cataractes added some offensive punch with Pistilli coming in.  He had 37 goals and 56 assists in 63 games with the Olympiques last season.  Michael Dubec also brings in the offensive punch with 78 points.  His 44 goals also led the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies last season.  Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll was the leading scorer for Shawinigan with 43 tallies and 40 helpers.  Goals shouldn’t be a problem for them.
On defense, Adam Bourque-Leblanc was the offensive leader for them.  His 37 points which included eight goals led the team.  Simon Lacroix also is another solid defenseman.  The New York Islanders draft pick had lit the lamp five times and added 34 assists in 2007-2008.
Montreal Juniors made Timo Pielmeier expendable after Jake Allen’s strong second half performance and his dominating performance at the World Under 18’s.  Pielmeier is a solid goalie that hasn’t shown his true potential yet.  He’s on a better team this season and his stats should show that.

Prediction: 1st in the Telus Central

Lewiston MAINEiacs
2007-2008 Season: 37-26-5-2 (5th in the Atlantic Division)

Off-Season Additions: Maxime Gratchev (From Rimouski), Garrette Clarke (1st Round Draft Pick), Michael Chaput (1st Round Draft Pick), Etienne Brodeur (1st Round Pick), and Filip Janosik (Import Selection)

Off-Season Subtractions: Kevin Marshall (To Quebec), Nicolas Therrien (To Chicoutimi), Brett Gallant (Personal Reasons) and Guillaume Durand (Decided not to come to camp)

Players That Aged Out: Stefano Giliati, Chris Tutalo, Jonathan Bernier (NHL/AHL), Stefan Chaput (AHL), Jakub Bundil (CIS), and Marc-Andre Daneau (CIS)
When you looked at this roster at the beginning of the season, it looked like a rebuilding year.  Ed Harding has been able to put a competitive team on the ice.  Maxime Gratchev should have a bounce back year this season.  It was a shorten season for him in because of injuries last year.  He will need to put the puck into the net.  Danick Paquette will have to step up offensively.  If he can stay out of the box, he has the potential to put up 70 to 80 points.  They will need to find that enforcer with Brett Gallant heading back home.  Beaton showed flashes last year but needs to put that full season together.  Give Michael Chaput sometime to get adjusted to the QMJHL before making an impact night in and night out.
Defensively this team has a strong top four.  They have a great mixture of offensive and defensive defensemen.  Patrick Cusack had six goals and 29 assists last year.  His 35 points was tied with Marshall’s 35 points for the team lead.  Michael Ward and Denis Reul are the stay at home defensemen.  Expect Reul to have a strong sophomore season this year.  Eric Gelinas will put up some offensive numbers this year and continue his success late last season.  Clarke is an all around defenseman that has a mean side.  Expect him to mix it up this year.  The real wildcard is Sean Stagles from Rochester, New York.  He will be a powerplay specialist and could take Tom Michalik spot on the roster when players come back from NHL camps.
With no more Jonathan Bernier, Peter Delmas is the number one goalie.  He should be fine playing a full load this year but will need to be the catalyst for the team.  Is Jonathan Connelly the next Peter Delmas?  Some say he was the best goalie in the 2008 Draft.  Can lighting strike again in the MAINEiacs favor?  We will see when Delmas heads to Colorado’s camp.
Prediction: 2nd in the Telus Central
Victoriaville Tigres
2007-2008 Season: 29-36-2-2 (9th in the Telus Division)
Off-Season Additions: Alexi Pianosi (From Moncton), Olivier Hinse (From Val d’Or), William Tremblay-Gratton (From Val d’Or), Loic Boivin (From Quebec), Brandan Hynes (1st Round Round Pick), and Andrej Nestrasil (Import Selection)

Off-Season Subtractions: Alexandre Monahan (Val d’Or)
Players That Aged Out: Steven Cacciotti, Louis-Etienne Leblanc, Toby Lafrance
On offense, Maxime Tanguay will be the go to guy this season.  Last year he had 16 goals and 21 assists.  That was a 23 point drop off from the 2006-2007 season where he had 24 goals and 36 assists.  He should rebound and put up solid numbers as a 19-year-old.  Dave Nolin will need to continue to develop.  As an 18-year-old last season, he had 41 points in 68 games.  There will be a lot of young players that will have to speed up the learning curve for this team to compete.
Jason Demers had 64 points last year which was on the second on the team.  Demers is a defenseman.  He will be a go to guy in many ways. Joel Chouinard is another offensive defenseman and had 8 goals and 27 assists.  Alexi Pianosi was dealt by Moncton because they revamped their defensive core.  He had a solid year in 2007-2008 with two goals and 15 assists.  I thought Victoriaville traded away Krill Tulupov but they received him from Chicoutimi.  He will be a valued veteran.
Kevin Poulin is a very good goalie but like I said before, he needs to work on his consistency.  He will have a chip on his shoulder because he fell to the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Draft.  At the beginning of last season, he was rated as one of the best goalies for the Draft.

Prediction: 3rd in the Telus Central

Drummondville Voltigeurs
2007-2008 Season: 14-51-2-3 (10th in the Telus Division)
Off-Season Additions: Olivier Hotte (From Rouyn-Noranada), Yannick Riendeau (From Rouyn-Noranada), Antoine Tardif (From Acadie-Bathurst), Dany Masse (From Acadie-Bathurst), Sean Couturier (1st Round Pick), Dmitry Kulikov (Import Selection), and Igor Golovkov (Import Selection)

Off-Season Subtractions: Jerome Gauthier-Leduc (To Rouyn-Noranda), Mitchell Porowski (To Gatineau), Charles Vouligny (To Acadie-Bathurst), Michael Trudel (Baie-Comeau), Radek Vlasanek (To Acadie-Bathurst), Jonathan Lessard (To Acadie-Bathurst)

Players That Aged Out: Etienne Bellavance-Martin and Garrett Peters
The Voltigeurs added some scoring punch with the addition of Yannick Riendeau and Dany Masse.  Both will be 20-year-olds this season. Riendeau had 23 goals and 26 assists in 42 games.  He spent some time in France last year also.  Masse had 29 goals and a total of 79 points from Acadie-Bathurst.  Marc-Olivier Vachon’s 33 points is the most by a returning player.  Scoring will need to come from the rookies to if the Voltigeurs want to compete.  Sean Couturier, the second overall pick, has three goals for a total of six points.  Dmitry Kulikov has three points in two games.
Marc-Antoine Desnoyers will lead the way on the blue line.  He had four goals and 13 assists for Drummondville last year.  Charles Landry had a very good rookie campaign as a 16-year-old with five goals and eight assists.  Overall the defense will be better then last year but I don’t think the team will get 30 wins.  They should be looking at the future.
Antoine Tardif is an average goalie but is better then what Drummondville had.  His numbers have been at least consistent.  In his first two years in the league, he had 14 wins in each season.  His goals against average was 3.56 in 2006-2007 and 3.52 last season.  His save percentage went up to .892 from .872 from two seasons ago.  The Voltigeurs don’t want him stay on the same plateau but they want him to make the jump to the next plateau.
Prediction: 4th in the Telus Central.

In the past eight weeks, combatants in the Proposition 8 battle have poured in more than $20 million to gear up for an all-out confrontation about whether the nation will begin to move toward tolerance of same-sex marriages or to preserve traditional views of marriage.
"It's a defining issue for this state and the country," said Brian Brown, executive director for the National Organization for Marriage, a New Jersey-based Mormon group with a branch in California, which has contributed nearly $1 million to the Yes on 8 campaign. The outcome of the battle, he said, "will affect what our children will be taught about marriage, and it will affect our religious liberties."
Opponents say the campaign to defeat the ballot measure is a fight for gay rights around the country.
"I really think this is our Gettysburg," said Kathy Levinson, a Silicon Valley philanthropist and gay rights activist who pledged last week to match $100,000 in donations to the No on 8 campaign. "If AdvertisementProposition 8 passes, we'd lose a generation of time. If we as a perceived liberal and tolerant state lose this battle, many smaller states will feel permission to say 'not yet.' If it fails, it's a statement that says the country has changed, that full acceptance of gay and lesbian citizens has come and it would be perceived as a watershed moment."
Thousands of Californians have contributed to the Yes on 8 campaign, including more than 250 from the East Bay who have given at least $1,000, according to campaign finance statements on the secretary of state's Web site. But, the big money has come from out-of-state groups such as Connecticut-based Knights of Columbus ($1.275 million), a Catholic men's organization; the National Organization for Marriage ($921,000); Mississippi-based American Family Association ($500,000); and Colorado-based Focus on the Family ($414,000), whose chairman is James Dobson, the evangelical Christian whose syndicated radio show is heard by millions.
Wealthy and well-connected individuals have pitched in. Elsa Prince, the matriarch of a powerful Michigan Republican family, donated $250,000 to the Yes on 8 campaign. She's the mother of Eric Prince, the co-founder of Blackwater Worldwide the controversial private military and security contractor and of Betsy DeVos, the Republican activist whose family has contributed millions to conservative causes.
Opponents have their heavy hitters, too, including Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who hasn't contributed to the campaign but has voiced his opposition to the initiative. The top contributor to the No on 8 campaign, Equality California ($3.6 million) is its sponsor. Others include Washington D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign ($2.3 million); Robert Wilson, a New York philanthropist ($1.2 million); and Bruce Bastian, a gay Mormon from Utah and co-founder of WordPerfect ($1 million).
PG E, the California Teachers Association, and the California State Council of Service Employees each donated $250,000 to the No on 8 cause. Steve Westly, the former state controller and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, has donated $5,000.
Twenty-seven states have constitutional amendments outlawing same-sex marriages 11 approved by voters in 2004, when the issue became a central part of President Bush's re-election, and seven more in 2006.
Three more states California, Arizona and Florida have the issue on November's ballot. Massachusetts and California are the only states that recognize same-sex marriages.
"If it passes, it will send the message that activist judges can't change the law," said Sherman Doll, a financial adviser from Concord.
He and his wife, Linda, have contributed $10,000 to the Yes on 8 campaign. "If it fails, it says that California has chosen to change the definition of marriage to the point that it's meaningless.
"Marriage will be any type of relationship that any person or group of persons choose."
Conservative and evangelical groups were freshly mobilized by the California Supreme Court's decision in May to overrule voters' approval of a ban on same-sex marriages in 2000. But the movement has its roots in the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s, said UC Berkeley sociology professor Michael Hout.
"They got as far as they could on abortion and have embraced marriage laws as the next step in their agenda," said Hout, co-author of "The Truth About Conservative Christians: What They Think and What They Believe." "Their main agenda remains the reversal of Roe v. Wade, but they're trying to gain new allies who look askance at gay marriage."
Not that it's a purely Machiavellian maneuver. Proponents of bans on same-sex marriage are "truly concerned that the state should not be licensing immoral behavior," Hout said.
"In their interpretation of the Bible, they see a prohibition on homosexual activity. Gay marriage condones a lifestyle that's ruled out by their reading of the Scripture."
A key feature of the state Supreme Court decision, say Yes on 8 forces, is that there is no residency requirement.
"Same-sex couples are flying in, getting married, and flying out," said Bruce Hausknect, judicial analyst for Focus on the Family.
"What happens in states that don't recognize same-sex marriage when there are custody disputes? It's part of their agenda to wear down other states. If they can create enough problems, they're hoping they'll force courts to take their cases, which could lead to overturning the laws.
"It's a subtle way," he added, "of forcing the same-sex agenda on unwilling states by exporting the problems to states that don't have same-sex protections."
Proponents also claim that same-sex marriage laws will lead to an acceptance of polygamy and polyamory (group marriages), and teaching about same-sex marriage in public schools.
The dire warnings are "scare tactics" of right-wingers feeding off myths and fears of the people, said Geoffrey Kors, executive director for Equality California.
"That's fundraising language, language to get their base motivated," Kors said. "The only gay agenda is about not being treated differently than others.
