Someone brought in a 200 year old civil war discharge paper to work today and wanted us to scan it and make a high quality copy to stick in a frame on a wall. It was kept in a 200 year old wallet/notebook with 200 year old doodles and notes in it. IPAPER. It was so cool.

As we approach Week 6 of the high school football season tonight, I admit I've got Philly on the brain.
I've been there four of the last five days, battling the Expressway and Blue Route (both were jammed Thursday night), battling obnoxious and drunken fans in the Citizens Bank Park parking lot and having nightmares involving all of those white towels the Phillies fans are waving at these NLDS playoff games.
I even picked up one of the towels that was left in a stack in the pressbox and took it home with me.
No, this lifelong Cardinals fan isn't going to be converted and won't be waving the towel above my head as I go about my day. Nor will I be draping it around my neck the way Easton football coach Steve Shiffert does.
No, I have a few other uses for it. For instance, it's perfect to wipe some of the bird off the window shield of my car. I could find some uses for it in the bathroom as well.
But maybe the best use for it is to wipe clean my crystal ball as I look ahead to the second half of the HS football regular season. The first half has seen more than its share of surprises -- the rise of Bangor and Northampton, the perfection of Emmaus, the three losses by Parkland etc., etc.
I am sure there's a few more shockers along the way and I'm even forecasting one tonight -- Nazareth over Easton. I'm covering the game and I'm sure if the Red Rovers roll they'll let me know how dumb I am. That's usually how I know people are still reading the paper, they let me know when I make a bad prediction on a football game. Never does, Hey Groller, you're a pompous bleep sound better.
Didn't have many bad picks last week, going 19-5 to improve my seasonal record to 87-36, for a so-so 70.7 percent.

It was nice to see Tim Massaquoi at Whitehall earlier this week, though. He's a man now, but he'll always be a great kid in my mind.
Nazareth 28, Easton 21: Blue Eagles are 3-2, let me repeat, 3-2. I know it'll get tougher from here on, but Rob Melosky and his veteran coaching staff must be doing something right. I'll be heading up there to Leh Stadium to watch this one myself and see if this team is for real.
Freedom 24, Northampton 21: Hopefully, the Patriots have stopped celebrating that big win over Parkland by now because the Konkrete Kids are for real, too, and won't back down.
Liberty 42, Becahi 14: Hurricanes are set to take out two years of frustration.
Emmaus 30, Dieruff 14: Huskies usually play Hornets tougher than expected.

Alonzo Mourning recently released a new book "Resilience: Faith, Focus, Triumph." The book is personal accounts of his life story, including his battle with the life-threatening kidney disease, focal segmental glomerular sclerosis.

The longtime All-Star center said he's hopeful the 231-page tale can inspire everyday people to overcome whatever challenges they face, much like how cycling champion Lance Armstrong's two books inspired Mourning in his fight against kidney disease.

"Lance was one of the people who inspired me to write this book," Mourning said in an interview with The Associated Press. "He played a big role in my overall approach to coming back and playing the game, reading both of his books, learning more about his life, his experiences and how he dealt with adversity. He motivated millions and millions of people in their lives, and I felt my story could have that same impact."

Mourning went out of his way to ensure that the book wasn't just a chronicle of his years playing college basketball at Georgetown and then his NBA stops in Charlotte, New Jersey and Miami, where he spent the bulk of his career and the team he'd like to return to at some point this season. He's still waiting to determine if he can recover from major injuries to his knee and leg suffered in a fall at Atlanta on Dec. 19, 2007 - the fourth anniversary of the kidney transplant that saved his life.

Mourning has been open about his fight against kidney disease, but the book touches on several other facets of his life, many of which he hasn't discussed at much length publicly before.

Among the highlights:

_ How actor, comedian and philanthropist Bill Cosby helped shape his life by paying for an education at Howard for the woman who would eventually become his wife, Tracy Wilson Mourning.

_ The tribulations of the recruiting trail as a coveted high school player, when Maryland, Syracuse, Virginia and Georgia Tech all wanted him to sign and wooed him with clothes, shoes, fancy dinners, even a trip to a strip club. "Everyone understood I could have gotten money at any of these places. The message was sent," Mourning wrote.

_ The ironic tale of how he was nearly too muscular to get a kidney transplant, because surgeons were having trouble finding a place in his body to put the new organ without cutting copious amounts of muscle. If they'd gone about the procedure that way, Mourning's career would have ended in the operating room.

"Everybody has a story," Mourning said. "And if everybody had an opportunity to put their story on paper, everybody reading those stories would find something that they would connect with. And I know there's so many positive things throughout my whole life that can help inspire and help people overcome certain adversities in their lives."

Mourning said he spent about two years planning and writing the book, some of the proceeds of which will be directed toward kidney transplantation programs and research.

The other words on the cover - faith, focus and triumph - are part of a message that Mourning said believes can be applied by anyone to any situation in life.

"We all are here for one purpose," Mourning said. "We're here to help fellow man and stimulate growth on this earth. That's what we're here for. God created the planets, the trees, the human beings, He put us here to grow and enhance things in a positive way. And there's more to me being on this earth than just being a basketball player. That's not how I want to be remembered.

More than 2,600 Warren Hills Regional School District taxpayers turned out today to vote on spending $5.5 million for new athletic facilities, with 59 percent of them on the winning side.
The referendum passed 1,550-1,076. It is projected to cost each taxpayer $60 per year, equal to taxpayers' share of debt the district is retiring this year.
Slated for completion in the 2010-11 school year, the project includes a new track and turf football field, new bleachers, a new field house, lighting and other projects.
Leading up to today's vote, the school district's Web site said many of the athletic facilities, including the track and bleachers, are deteriorating and unsafe, forcing several teams to compete or practice at other schools or on municipal fields.
Voters twice rejected a similar proposition in 2004.
In December of that year, voters approved $36.8 million to expand Warren Hills Regional high and middle schools but rejected a second question that would have appropriated $6.1 million for a new athletic center and artificial turf field. Both proposals had been included in a single question earlier in 2004 and failed.

Everyone knows what happened with the Boston Celtics last year. Before the season began they prized Ray Allen away from the Seattle Sonics and then even more stunningly, they traded away the future of the team Al Jefferson, for the present and acquired the Big Ticket himself, Kevin Garnett. It was a gamble and it paid off. KG infused the team with his energy and defensive mindset and the team dominated the regular season, playing suffocating defence.
Then they hit the playoffs and struggled to put away the lowly Atlanta Hawks in seven games. They had more troubles against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, prevailing in another seven game series before beating the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Finals. In the NBA Finals they were underdogs against the Kobe Bryant led LA Lakers yet triumphed in what some have called a six game sweep. The Boston Three Party had brought the Celtics their first title since 1986. 
The team is mostly intact from last years championship squad except for one major loss - James Posey to the New Orleans Hornets. Posey played great defence through the playoffs and hit numerous big shots when needed and his absence will be felt. To replace him the Celtics have signed Darius Miles, a player who had already retired due to medical reasons, and a pair of rookies JR Giddens and Bill Walker. Needless to say Pierces backup is a weak spot. 
On the surface the Celtics are all about the Big Three and KG, Allen and Pierce are all excellent players. Yet the success of the Celtics depends on their supporting cast. Kendrick Perkins and Rajan Rondo are ultimately as important as the other starters, Rondo in particular. Last year in the playoffs opposing teams made the Celtics pay for Rondos poor shooting so it is imperative that Rondo has worked on his shooting stroke in the off-season. If he has developed a reliable outside shot then the Celtics will be favourites to repeat.
Coach: 
Until last year I was not a believer in Doc Rivers. I was in the Bill Simmons school of NBA watchers who thought Doc only kept his job because of his expert playing of the media. But in the NBA Finals he won me over, out coaching the Zen master Phil Jackson. It helps that he has one of the best assistant coaches in the league on his bench, defensive maestro Tom Thibodeau. 
Bench: 
The bench is not the leagues best but nor is it the worst. At times they proved game changing through the antics of Posey, Leon Powe, PJ Brown and Eddie House. Posey is gone and Brown will probably retire so the onus falls on Powe to continue to improve. Tony Allen is fit again and he should hopefully develop to take on a lot of Poseys role.  Sometime in the season a quality veteran will become available ala Sam Cassell and PJ Brown last year, and that will also strengthen the bench.
